Pesaro - Urbino combines impressive Renaissance culture with nature parks, the Adriatic coast and regional traditions. This connection is particularly evident in the historic centre of Urbino. It is located in the Province of Pesaro, the Provincia di Pesaro e Urbino, in the Marche region. Almost completely preserved Renaissance walls with bastions enclose the Ducal Palace, the cathedral, the Santa Chiara monastery and a complex system of oratories. Urbino is regarded as a pinnacle of Renaissance art and architecture, adapted in an exceptionally harmonious way to its natural setting and its medieval predecessor.

Culture and history

Important cultural sites are also concentrated outside the historic centre. The Museo Nazionale Rossini in Pesaro is located on the piano nobile of Palazzo Montani Antaldi and documents Gioachino Rossini’s biography and extensive operatic output in ten rooms. The archaeological site of Colombarone lies in the Parco Naturale Regionale del Monte San Bartolo, along the ancient Via Flaminia. The historic Palazzo Ducale and the ruins of the Fortezza Albornoz are also located in the surrounding area of the Provincia di Pesaro e Urbino.

The wider regional surroundings of the Provincia di Pesaro e Urbino are home to the Fondazione Villa Del Bali' museum and the Museo della Civiltà Contadina, Grotte, Arte Sacra. Another Roman trace is preserved by the Bronzi Dorati da Cartoceto: they are the only gilded bronze group from Roman times that has survived to the present day.

Nature and landscape

The Parco Naturale Interregionale del Sasso Simone e Simoncello covers 4,791 hectares and is located in the provinces of Pesaro-Urbino and Rimini. The Parco Naturale Regionale del Monte San Bartolo has a different landscape character, with its spectacular cliffs on the Adriatic Sea. It reaches its highest elevations on the hills of San Bartolo and Castellaro and near Casteldimezzo and Fiorenzuola di Focara. The park is also an important area for bird migration and the overwintering of various bird species.

The mountain Cima Castiglione, the mountain Monte San Lorenzo, the summit Poggio le Guaine and the summit Il Cimaio are located in the surrounding area of the Provincia di Pesaro e Urbino. Nature and archaeology meet in the Furlo state nature reserve, where trekking, cycling tours and birdwatching are possible.

Routes and experiences

Itinerario 2 in the Parco Naturale Regionale del Monte San Bartolo leads from Fiorenzuola di Focara via the village of Casteldimezzo to Tetto del Mondo. The same park also organises nature excursions, motorboat trips, festivals and cultural tours. The Pesaro-Fano cycle and walking path also runs between the two coastal towns on its own route and is well signposted.

The CEA Furlo e Valle del Metauro offers, among other things, archaeological trekking in the Acqualagna area. In Urbania, the CEA San Martino offers guided educational visits for schools and families along the approximately 1,500-metre-long Bosco dei Folletti nature and fantasy trail. Goblin statues and their little houses tell the story of a fantasy family there. Urbania is also home to the Festa della Befana, a traditional family event.

Regional products and traditions

An official discovery route through the olive-growing landscape of the Marche begins in Sassocorvaro Auditore in the Provincia di Pesaro e Urbino, near Lago di Mercatale. Sassocorvaro Auditore is known for producing high-quality extra virgin olive oil and is surrounded by extensive olive groves.

Acqualagna is known as the truffle capital of the Marche. In Gradara, the initiative “Il Medioevo a Tavola” organises medieval cuisine days throughout the year; on these occasions, the town’s restaurants are transformed into fifteenth-century taverns.
