Frontone lies at the foot of the Monte Catria massif. The town is home to Castello della Porta, Rocca di Frontone and the churches of Madonna del Soccorso and Santa Maria dell’Acqua Nera. Crescia di Frontone is part of the local cuisine. The location at the foot of the massif gives the town a direct connection to the mountain area.
Rocca, churches and the history of Frontone
The history of Castello della Porta and the civic community of Frontone dates back to the 11th century. Castello della Porta is connected to the “Pesaro-Urbino Rebirth - Terzo anello” hiking trail. This connection creates a direct link between culture and activity. The municipal art collection is housed in Rocca di Frontone. The collection comprises works owned by the municipality that come from the church of Madonna del Soccorso.
The 14th-century church of Santa Maria dell’Acqua Nera houses a terracotta statue of the Virgin Mary with the Child. Thus, alongside the art collection in the Rocca, a specific work of art is also the focus in one of Frontone’s churches.
Festivals and traditions in Frontone
The Palio del Conte di Frontone is a historical reenactment. In the Palio del Conte, Frontone’s four contrade compete against one another. They bear the names Teodoro, Antonio, Barbara and Madonna del Buonconsiglio and compete in contests of skill and dexterity. The competition brings the four contrade together in a clearly defined festival format.
Crescia and local cuisine
The Festa della Crescia e dello Spignolo takes place every year at the end of May in the centre of Frontone. Crescia di Frontone has a municipal designation of origin. In Frontone, Crescia in graticola is prepared directly over glowing coals. Thus, both the designation of origin and preparation over the fire are part of Frontone’s culinary description.
Hiking, cycling and mountain nature around Frontone
The Frontone area is suitable for hiking, mountain biking and snowshoeing. Frontone is also a stage on the Ciclo Appenninica Alte Marche cycling route. Birds of prey can be observed in the Frontone area. When planning days outdoors, this means that trails, cycle routes, winter activities and nature observation are available as different areas of focus.
The mountain area includes the Kinderland Adventure Park in the Monte Catria area. The park is located at an altitude of 1,400 metres next to Refuge Cotaline and has three adventure courses with safety harnesses. The main summit of Monte Catria reaches 1,701 metres. There are 301 metres of elevation between the park’s altitude and the main summit. The two specific elevations describe the location of the park and the highest summit of the massif.
Motorhome pitches in Frontone
Frontone is part of the “Comune Amico del Turismo Itinerante” network. The network provides motorhomes with pitches offering basic facilities such as waste disposal and drinking water. The pitches and their basic facilities are therefore expressly intended for motorhomes.
