Cartoceto: Olive Oil, History and Paths through the Hills

Cartoceto lies on a hill at an altitude of 235 metres, surrounded by olive groves and cultivated fields. The landscape and the long olive-growing tradition give the town a clear identity: olive cultivation reaches its greatest extent in the Cartoceto area and is favoured by a distinctive local microclimate. Extensive olive oil production has been documented here since as early as the late 13th century.

Olive Oil and Farming Tradition

This history can be traced through several special places. The Frantoio del Trionfo is an 18th-century olive mill with a mechanical belt drive. From there, panoramic views extend across the Metauro Valley to the coast of Fano. The Frantoio della Rocca is a restored example of the architecture of the historic centre and offers special selections of extra virgin olive oil. Regional cuisine is also part of Cartoceto’s identity: vincisgrassi was a popular and widespread dish of the local farming tradition.

Historic Places in the Townscape

In the centre, the Palazzo del Popolo defines today’s Piazza Garibaldi; it is crowned by a clock tower. Its original structure is believed to date back to the 12th century, while an initial reconstruction is documented for the 14th century. The palazzo was integrated into Cartoceto’s town walls and served a military and defensive purpose with a drawbridge.

The religious buildings also tell different chapters of the town’s history. The present structure of the Collegiata di Santa Maria della Misericordia was built from 1831 to 1840. The Pieve dei Santi Pietro e Paolo lies about one kilometre from the historic centre on a hilltop overlooking the lower Metauro Valley. This pieve contains the fresco “Crocifissione”, which was restored in 1998 and returned to its original state from 1477. Immediately outside the historic centre lies the Convento e Chiesa di Santa Maria del Soccorso complex, surrounded by the greenery of Monte Partemio.

Paths and Experiences around Cartoceto

The Via dell’Acqua offers routes between mills, springs and olive groves. During guided tours of olive mills, visitors can experience the production of olive oil, learn about the culture of olive growing and learn to recognise high-quality extra virgin olive oil. The “Cartoceto DOP, il Festival” offers guided green routes for exploring the surrounding area. Prior registration was required to take part in this festival’s “I Sentieri Verdi”.

Another cultural highlight is the Teatro del Trionfo. It was established in the first half of the 18th century in place of an existing olive mill with an attached olive storage area and has three tiers of boxes with a total of 37 boxes.
