Candelara appeals to travelers who want to combine history and landscapes during their stay. A holiday apartment in Candelara takes you to a place on a hill 180 meters high. From there, the 360-degree panoramic view stretches from the Adriatic Sea, with Ravenna and Ancona, to the Apennines, with the mountains Catria, Nerone and Carpegna. This means that getting your bearings does not begin with an interchangeable local setting, but with a clear transition between the coast and the mountains. The elevated location combines distant views with the town’s historic buildings. Ravenna and Ancona mark the seaside side of the panoramic view.

Historic places with their own character

The origins of the Pieve di Santo Stefano date back to the 6th to 8th centuries. Its Gothic masonry and unusual Greek-cross floor plan give the building a distinctive architectural profile. The Borgo di Candelara is also known as Castello di Candelara and was established after the year 1000. Castello di Candelara is considered a fine example of 15th-century military architecture. This view of the town’s history is complemented by the Chiesa di Santa Lucia, which dates from 1485. The architecture is therefore not limited to a single building type.

Landscape between valleys and the Apennines

Small valleys, oak forests, macchia, vineyards, olive groves and deciduous woodland surround Candelara. To appreciate the surroundings, expansive distant views and different types of landscape stand side by side. The landscape can therefore be experienced both from a distance and through its varied areas. The small valleys form the immediate landscape around Candelara.

Smaller points of interest also form part of the townscape. The restored Torre dell’orologio contains old, fully functioning mechanisms. The Museo PAC (Pie Artigiane Cristiane) is dedicated to textile art as well as embroidery, cutting and sewing.

Candele a Candelara in winter

A special event is the Christmas market “Candele a Candelara”. It takes place between the end of November and the first days of December. During “Candele a Candelara”, the electric lighting is deliberately switched off twice for 15 minutes each time, so that Candelara is illuminated only by the warm light of candles. Anyone planning a trip during this period will experience a clearly defined seasonal highlight of the town. The change in lighting is part of the market’s set schedule.

Traffic regulations in Candelara

Ordinance No. 880/2002 established a restricted traffic zone. There, driving and parking are prohibited around the clock on every day of the year. Anyone traveling by vehicle must therefore observe the driving ban and the parking ban separately.
