Calmazzo between the Metauro and Via Flaminia

Roman traces and the Ponte di Traiano

In Roman times, the vicus of Calmazzo stood at the point where a branch of the consular Via Flaminia led towards Urbino and Fermignano. Near Calmazzo, the Via Flaminia crosses the Metauro on the Ponte di Traiano. The bridge is associated with its construction at Trajan’s instigation in 115 AD. It was destroyed during the Second World War and rebuilt after the war. The Ponte di Traiano had three openings: two semicircular arches with a diameter of 11.30 m and a 4 m arch near the right bank.

The Cissoni Tomb Enclosure

A Roman tomb enclosure was found immediately outside the built-up area of Calmazzo. The Cissoni tomb enclosure in Calmazzo dates from the 2nd century AD and is a rectangular area of approximately 135 m². It is enclosed by a boundary made of rusticated cippi and large slabs of local stone. Two marble altars on a stepped podium give the tomb enclosure a monumental character. It contains one cremation burial and two inhumation burials.

Church, museum and botanical garden

The grave goods from the Cissoni tomb enclosure are displayed at the Museo Civico “A. Vernarecci” in Fossombrone. They include oil lamps, ceramic objects, glass vessels and a small gold chain. Santa Maria del Carmine in Calmazzo is housed in a contemporary circular building. Construction began in 1985; the church was consecrated in 1996. Calmazzo is also home to Terre di Raffaello, which has a botanical garden. It serves as a venue for guided tours, courses, meetings, and leisure and work activities.

Cycling and nature observation

A cycling tour along the ancient Via Flaminia includes a stop in Calmazzo. On this cycling tour, Fossombrone can be reached approximately twelve minutes after the stop in Calmazzo. “Giardini in Movimento” is an annual competition intended to further develop the botanical garden of Terre di Raffaello through innovative projects. At the Candigliano near Calmazzo, the riverside woodland is home to a grey heron colony.
