Holiday apartment in Penna San Giovanni: culture, churches and cycling tour
Culture and history in Penna San Giovanni
Sacred and historic sites include the Pinacoteca Comunale, the Pieve di San Giovanni Battista and the Chiesa di San Francesco. The Pinacoteca Comunale is located in the former Chiesa di Sant’Antonio Abate. Another prominent landmark is the Pieve di San Giovanni Battista: it was built between 1251 and 1256 by Giorgio da Como and houses a wooden statue of Saint John the Baptist dating from the 15th century.
The Chiesa di San Francesco also combines architectural history with religious memory. It was built at the end of the 15th century for Franciscan monks and houses the relics of Blessed Giovanni da Penna. The site therefore tells not only of a single period of construction, but also leads you through different layers of time in the local history of sacred architecture.
The Teatro Comunale is located in the Palazzo Priorale and was built around 1780. Thus, alongside the churches, the Teatro Comunale in the Palazzo Priorale is also one of the town’s cultural attractions.
The Chiesa di Santa Filomena has a single-nave layout and retains its original terracotta floor. It is also the only surviving part of an ancient monastery. Inside, there is also a Holy Family attributed to Sassoferrato. The terracotta floor, the monastery remnant and the attributed Holy Family thus combine architectural history and art in a single building.
The Torre della Comunità is well preserved and dates back to the year 1100. The Palazzo Municipale houses finds from the imperial period. Together, the two sites lead from the medieval past to the Roman era and complement the ecclesiastical buildings with additional historical perspectives.
The Palazzo comunale, the Museo civico archeologico and the Pinacoteca Fortunato Duranti are also located in the surroundings of Penna San Giovanni. The Rocca in Parco Monte is the surviving remains of an ancient watchtower. In addition to the churches, a palace, archaeological heritage, art and a historic defensive structure are therefore also part of the regional cultural history of Penna San Giovanni.
