Macerata reveals itself through a variety of settings: palaces and city walls, Roman traces, stages and walking paths with views. Particularly impressive is the combination of culture and landscape, which is already evident within the city and in the surrounding area.
Culture
The museum collection at Palazzo Ricci comprises more than 350 paintings and sculptures. The piano nobile includes the Salone delle feste, whose decorative cycle was inspired by Ovid's Metamorphoses. During the museum's opening hours, it can be visited free of charge without a guided tour. In the vicinity of Macerata, Palazzo Ricci is listed as a palace.
The Sferisterio has 104 boxes. The building was constructed between 1820 and 1829 on the initiative of a group of wealthy citizens; during the summer seasons, the Sferisterio hosts opera performances and major music events. The Appassionata concert series is also taking place in Macerata in its 19th season, including at the Teatro Lauro Rossi and other venues in the city.
The Palazzo Buonaccorsi museum complex includes the Museo della Carrozza, departments for ancient art and modern art, and the Galleria dell'Eneide. In the vicinity of Macerata, Palazzo Buonaccorsi is listed as a palace and the Museo della Carrozza as a museum. Also nearby are the Museo di Storia Naturale, listed as a museum, the Giardini Diaz as a garden, and the Parco Naturale Di Fontescodella as a park.
The natural history museum has been housed since June 1993 in the basement rooms of the historic Palazzo Rossini Lucangeli. The Torre Civica provides another historic highlight: its construction began around 1492 and was completed in 1653.
History
The Roman past becomes tangible at Helvia Ricina. The site became a Roman municipium around the middle of the 1st century BC. Roman stones, pieces of marble and several funerary inscriptions are exhibited in the theatre of Helvia Ricina. The historic walls of Macerata also tell of a long urban history: they were built in the mid-14th century on the orders of Cardinal Albornoz.
The four entrance gates to the historic centre lie along the city walls and can be explored on a pleasant, level walk. Le quattro porte offers views of the Monti Sibillini and the Adriatic Sea. On the outskirts of Macerata is also the Ecomuseo Villa Ficana: a village with houses made of clay and straw on a hillside.
Landscape and walks
The landscape also reveals itself in clear, varied forms beyond the historic buildings. A park on a hill in the village of Montalbano on the outskirts of Macerata overlooks the valleys of the Potenza and Chienti. Monte Tabor is located in the vicinity of Macerata and is listed as a mountain. Monte Acuto lies in the wider regional area around Macerata and is also listed as a mountain.
Thus, the spatial perspective extends from a level path along the city walls, across a hill on the outskirts, to mountains in the surrounding area and the wider regional area.
