Holiday apartment in Capriglia: Fortress, Art and the Monti Sibillini

Capriglia between the Sibillini and fortress history

Capriglia is located in the Macerata area of the Monti Sibillini National Park. Here, the landscape combines with military history, sacred art and regional culinary traditions. A holiday apartment in Capriglia may therefore suit a trip in which you bring together nature, historic buildings and art-historical details in different daily itineraries.

The Rocca and medieval traces

The Rocca di Capriglia came into the possession of the Da Varano family around the middle of the 14th century. It was an important southern defensive stronghold of the State of Camerino. Two towers, sections of the curtain walls and a stone entrance arch with a portcullis remain from the medieval fortress.

San Biagio: architecture and artworks

The bell tower of the Church of San Biagio originated from a tower of Capriglia's former fortress; the church features Romanesque architectural elements. A fresco of the Madonna of the Rosary from 1585 is attributed to Fabio Angelucci. It depicts the Virgin with Saints Dominic and Catherine, angels and groups of worshippers. For those interested in culture, Capriglia's chronological sequence extends from the medieval Rocca to the 1585 fresco of the Madonna of the Rosary in San Biagio.

Paolo da Visso's polyptych consists of ten panels in two registers and is dated to around 1470. The lower register depicts the enthroned Virgin and Child, along with Saints Margaret, John the Baptist and Blaise; Venantius may also be represented. Paolo da Visso's trompe-l'oeil polyptych on canvas was painted for the Church of San Biagio in Capriglia. San Biagio therefore offers several points of connection for exploring medieval and later sacred art.

Paths, faith and regional products

The Church of San Biagio near Capriglia Castle is a place connected with the Cammini Lauretani, south of Pieve Torina. The hamlet of Capriglia is associated with Luca Angeli, a producer of Pecorino dei Monti Sibillini. Capriglia Castle was part of the planned route for a walk organised by the municipality on 17 March 2024. The walk in March 2024 was announced as an easy, guided tour with commentary and was to be accompanied by two guides.
