Vendrogno is a district of the municipality of Bellano and lies on the sunny slope of the 1,799-metre-high Monte Muggio. From here, there are views of Lake Como. At the same time, the Val Muggiasca opens up as a distinctive landscape: the valley associated with Vendrogno lies between Bellano and Tartavalle and forms a narrow post-glacial gorge created by a stream, extending mainly along the south-western ridge of Monte Muggio.

Museums, churches and traces of Muggiasca

The MUU Museo del Latte e della Storia della Muggiasca is an ethnographic museum in Località Vendrogno in Bellano. It preserves artefacts and traditions associated with life and the material culture of Muggiasca. The museum is located in Vendrogno’s former Turnus dairy and comprises six exhibition rooms on three floors. The tour presents the individual stages of milk processing.

In the Chiesa di San Lorenzo, the bell tower is probably the oldest structure of the church that can still be identified today. The domes over the crossing and the presbytery are decorated with figurative murals. The Museo della Resistenza in Muggiasca is located in the room next to the sacristy of the Chiesa di San Grato. In Sanico, the Chiesa di San Giacomo preserves a wooden statue of Saint James from the 18th century, while the Chiesa di San Sebastiano in Comasira contains paintings from the 15th century.

The routes through the settlement also tell of different eras. In Vendrogno with Bruga, there are fourteen portals, mostly with round arches, whose chronological sequence begins in the Middle Ages. A route through the districts leads to thirteen chapels from different periods. The Santuario della Madonna di Loreto, also known as La Madonnina, stands completely separate from the houses on a hill on the edge of the settlement and offers panoramic views. The Chiesa della Madonna della Neve was built in 1630 following a vow made by the people of Vendrogno who had been spared the plague.

Hiking trails for different abilities

The memory trail follows old paths and connects Bellano and Valsassina via Vendrogno. The complete La transumanza verticale route is intended for well-trained hikers who want to explore a landscape shaped by former rural life. Its route leads from Sanico via Mosnico and Vendrogno to Ombriaco. Hiking trail 08 is also suitable for less experienced hikers and focuses on the relationship between farming culture and religious life.

In its complete version, hiking trail 09 is a panoramic hike along the mountain slope above the lake. It begins in the Vendrogno area at Via per Noceno, leads to the district of Noceno and is recommended for well-trained hikers. On the GT – Grand Tour, the descent from Croce di Muggio can be made via the Vendrogno and Bellano sections. The different routes and levels of difficulty provide guidance for comparing the trails and planning your hiking days.

Local traditions and regional flavours

The Festa Madonna della Neve in Loc. Vendrogno, Bellano, was a two-day celebration in 2025 featuring tradition, music, culinary delights and performances. A tasting of local products was scheduled from 7:00 p.m. In Vendrogno, the history of Muggiasca, religious sites, trails on Monte Muggio and insights into the regional food culture thus come together.
