The province’s nature and archaeology trail can be followed either chronologically, from prehistory to the 15th or 16th century, or geographically, from north to south. Culture and history

In Carenno, Ca’ Martì includes an associated archaeological educational trail on the history of construction work, with 16 stations in the surrounding area. It documents the history, life and work of the bricklayers of Carenno and Val San Martino. Another historic site is the archaeological site of a Gothic settlement dating from the 5th to the 6th century AD. It is open to visitors, who can view the remains of a fortified complex built during the late Roman Empire.

The museums and historic buildings also lead through different eras. The Torre di Maggiana, also known as “del Barbarossa”, dates from the 12th century and can be accessed across its five floors. Palazzo Belgiojoso houses the Natural History Museum, the Archaeological Museum, the Historical Museum and the Civico Planetario. There, the economic, social and environmental history of the Lecco area spans from the Palaeolithic to the present day. The Museo delle Grigne documents the development of the Esino area through Alpine and pre-Alpine minerals, Triassic fossils, ethnographic objects, and weapons and jewellery from ancient tombs.

Forte Montecchio is a First World War fortress carved into the rock. It includes massive walls made of worked granite, a powder magazine more than 60 metres deep and four Schneider guns. The Civico Museo della Seta Abegg preserves machinery from disused silk mills, much of which is still operational. The museum is officially recognised as a museum collection by the Lombardy Region. Meanwhile, the Sentiero del Viandante passes through historic villages and rural architecture, by old mills, castles and quiet rural churches.

Nature and trails

Parco Monte Barro has 44 kilometres of well-signposted trails leading to the park’s main sights. Monte Barro includes rocky cliffs and dry grasslands with an especially rich flora, including rare and endemic plants. The garden of Villa Monastero now stretches for almost two kilometres along the lakefront.

The Sentiero del Viandante frequently crosses the Lecco–Colico–Sondrio railway line. This allows hikers to walk individual stages and return to the starting point by train. The Anello dei Laghi also runs along the water: it begins in the centre of Lecco and follows the Adda River to Pescarenico. At around 20 kilometres long, this cycling and walking route forms a circuit between the lakes of Garlate and Olginate along the Adda River. The Anello dei Laghi is mostly flat, suitable for families and can be walked or cycled in any season as a half-day or full-day excursion.

Mountains and winter

The Piani Resinelli lie at an altitude of around 1,300 metres in Parco delle Grigne, at the foot of the Grigne. From there, views extend from the Rhaetian Alps to Monte Rosa, over Lecco and the Lecco branch of Lake Como to the plain and, on clear days, to the Milan skyline. The Piani Resinelli are the starting point for numerous trails, from easy family hikes to more technically demanding routes. In the Parco Minerario of the Piani Resinelli, visitors can explore tunnels connected with the area’s historic mining activity.

Artavaggio offers trekking, mountain biking, skiing, ski touring, a fun park and snowshoeing. This brings together various explicitly named mountain and winter sports activities, while the Piani Resinelli, with their trails and historic mining activity, showcase further facets of the Alpine area.
