Primaluna among Meadows, Forests and Mining History

Primaluna has a multifaceted character: The area around the town includes extensive fertile meadows crossed by the Torrente Pioverna. Dense chestnut, beech and pine forests grow on the slopes of the Grigna in the Primaluna area. Meadows along the river and wooded slopes therefore form two distinct landscapes. For nature enthusiasts, the course of the Torrente Pioverna, the extensive meadows and the wooded Grigna slopes are tangible landscape features within the Primaluna area.

Church Art and Historical Traces

The parish church of San Pietro e Paolo houses three paintings from Titian’s school. They were acquired in Venice in 1607. Primaluna is also home to a Serassi organ built in 1858 by the Serassi brothers from Bergamo. The ecclesiastical heritage in Primaluna dates from 1607 to 1858, spanning two different centuries.

The historic centre of Primaluna preserves an old medieval village with ancient portals, churches decorated with frescoes and the coats of arms of noble families. The remains of the ancient tower keep of the Torre di Primaluna include the central layout and the first ring of walls with a loophole overlooking the valley. Those interested in organically developed townscapes and historic architectural forms will find tangible points of reference here.

The Museo Etnografico in Primaluna was established a few years ago to collect evidence of the everyday lives of earlier generations. Information about opening days and hours for the Museo civico storico ed etnografico is available on request.

Mining, Horse Riding and Cycling Route

The Cortabbio Mining Park offers an underground walk and leads into the interior of the Grigna Settentrionale. Along the way, it provides insights into the geological and human history of this mountain, which is symbolic of the Province of Lecco. The “nuovo ribasso” section of the Cortabbio mine lies at an altitude of 552 m and is part of a larger complex with 16 tunnels. The combination of the underground walk and the specific information about altitude and tunnels gives the mining park a clearly defined historical focus.

Saba Ranch organises one- to three-hour rides along the Pioverna River. The ranch also offers an American riding school, pony rides, and courses for children and adults. Rides of a set duration are therefore available alongside the riding school, pony rides and lessons. A one- to three-hour ride can be scheduled as a separate block of time in the day alongside the riding school, pony rides and courses.

The Valsassina cycling route is also relevant for cyclists: It reaches Primaluna and continues to Cortenova, where the route ends. For route planning, Cortenova marks the end point of a ride from Primaluna.
