Olgiasca lies on a peninsula 370 metres high, which contributes to the formation of the small and charming Gulf of Laghetto di Piona. The Baia di Piona complements this landscape with clear blue water, beaches and coves. When choosing a holiday apartment in Olgiasca, you can therefore weigh up cultural discoveries, trails through the countryside and excursions by the water.

Piona Abbey between history and landscape

At the tip of the small Olgiasca peninsula, in the municipality of Colico, lies Piona Abbey, more precisely the Piona Priory. It is considered a rare gem of Lombard Romanesque architecture. A monastic community was already living here in the 7th century AD. The long historical perspective is combined here with a concrete hiking experience: CAI trail markers 7/7A lead to Piona Abbey, and the CAI trail runs near the old Lourdes Grotto beside the abbey.

Piona Abbey is also accessible by car, and free parking is available.

Holiday apartment in Olgiasca for trails with varied impressions

A distinctive destination is Falesia Sass Negher, a granite climbing area in the project area of the Olgiasca peninsula. From Olgiasca, it can be reached via CAI trail 7 and an access path of approximately 15 minutes. Falesia Sass Negher also offers an impressive view of the Baia di Piona. For a CAI hike, you can park in the Olgiasca hamlet near the parish church.

The return route to Olgiasca follows marker 7A along a beautifully paved road. This connection also has a historical context: the Strada Vegia was an old crossing that connected the villages on the eastern shore of the lake with Colico, Valtellina and Valchiavenna. Old stone waymarkers point to the year 1755. The Strada Vegia made it possible to travel from Olgiasca to Colico while avoiding the lower area, which was very marshy at the time.

Viewpoints over the lake and mountains

The path to Piona Abbey passes a natural viewing balcony overlooking Lake Como. Another viewpoint opens up a view of Monte Legnone. Together with the view from Falesia Sass Negher, this creates a route where historical destinations and striking landscapes come together, without both impressions having to be experienced in the same place.

Easy nature excursion on the Piona peninsula

For a more peaceful outing, the highest part of the Piona peninsula offers an easy nature excursion along a path that is also suitable for children. The hiking trail climbs uphill to Olgiasca. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between a visit to the historically significant abbey, a hike with views and a gentler nature experience.

Further places for planning your trip

If, in addition to Olgiasca, you would like to consider other places in the same region, here are some further destinations: Campo, Brivio, Premana, Pasturo, Cassago Brianza, Vestreno, Garbagnate Monastero and Costa Masnaga.

To the higher-level travel overview: Lecco.
