Morterone combines church architecture with clean lines, contemporary art outdoors and an easy circular hike on the slopes of Monte Resegone. Culture, nature and physical activity each stand on their own with their own settings and impressions.
Church of Santa Maria Assunta
The present complex of the Chiesa della Beata Vergine Assunta dates from 1826. Its layout comprises a single rectangular nave with a barrel vault, six side chapels and a semicircular presbytery. The exterior also characterizes its appearance: the church is plastered and painted white, and its façade is crowned by a tympanum. In front of it is a deep pronaos with a square floor plan. The interplay between the nave, side chapels and presbytery shapes the interior; the tympanum and pronaos structure the façade. The bell tower of the Chiesa della Beata Vergine Assunta, also known as Santa Maria Assunta, was built between 1848 and 1849. Those interested in architecture will find the barrel-vaulted nave, six side chapels, a semicircular presbytery, as well as a tympanum and pronaos at this church in Morterone.
Contemporary Art Outdoors
Another perspective is offered by the Museo d'Arte Contemporanea all'Aperto di Morterone. The idea for this museum emerged in the mid-1980s. It connects the language of art with nature through a network of paths. Works are installed in front of houses and on walls. The paths distribute the works throughout the outdoor space; houses, walls and nature thus become different spatial points of reference for the art. This creates not a single, enclosed viewing location, but an interplay of art, the built environment and nature. For this reason, the Museo d'Arte Contemporanea all'Aperto di Morterone connects art not only with interiors, but also with the houses, walls and paths of Morterone.
An Easy Circular Hike on Monte Resegone
The Sentiero dei Grandi Alberi is an easy hike during which you can experience the Resegone Regional Forest and see numerous beech trees. The approximately 7 km circular trail runs along the slopes of Monte Resegone; it starts and ends in Morterone at an altitude of 1,085 m. The approximate trail length and the fixed starting and ending point in Morterone provide a clear framework for planning your day. You can choose between a cultural itinerary featuring the Chiesa della Beata Vergine Assunta and the Museo d'Arte Contemporanea all'Aperto di Morterone, and an active day on the Sentiero dei Grandi Alberi, allowing you to set different priorities.
Palaces in the Surrounding Area
The Palazzotto di Don Rodrigo, the Casa di Lucia and the Palazzo Belgioioso are located in the area around Morterone. All three buildings are palaces. The three palaces extend the architectural theme in the area around Morterone beyond the church.
Other places to include in your travel plans are Vestreno, Cremella, Vendrogno, Mandello Del Lario, Bellano, Calolziocorte, Cassina Valsassina and Bosisio Parini.
