If you are planning a holiday apartment stay in Fiumelatte, you can look forward to a place with unusual natural phenomena, lakeside paths and a variety of excursion destinations around Varenna. The stream of the same name, the Grotta di Fiumelatte and historical sights give your stay different focal points – from a short discovery by the water to longer walks and cultural visits.
Stream, karst and an unusual natural landscape
The Fiumelatte stream runs for around 250 m from its source to the lake. Its foaming waters give the stream a milky-white colour. Above the village of the same name in the municipality of Varenna, the Grotta di Fiumelatte opens at 325 m above sea level. It is one of the most striking karst phenomena in the entire Grigna massif. An experiment confirmed the direct relationship between the Grotta di Fiumelatte and the karst system in the mountain’s summit area.
The changing nature of the water is also important for observing nature: the Grotta di Fiumelatte is not a spring that flows all year round, but has a seasonal regime with alternating periods of low and high water.
Paths between Varenna and Fiumelatte
The village of Fiumelatte, crossed by the river of the same name, can be reached from Varenna town centre via an approximately 20-minute walk along a section of the Greenway dei Patriarchi. Access to the Sorgente di Fiumelatte leads from Piazza San Giorgio in Varenna via Via Roma and past the cemetery to a staircase. The path then continues halfway up the slope, parallel to the lake, as far as Fiumelatte.
Hikers can also take the lower variant of the Sentiero del Viandante. It passes the Fiumelatte springs between Lierna, Varenna and Perledo. A small, well-equipped picnic area is located directly by the river near the Sorgente di Fiumelatte. In Varenna, the Passeggiata degli Innamorati also provides a short lakeside walk from the ferry landing to the town centre. The different path lengths and characteristics make it easier to plan your days around walks, nature observation and time by the lake.
Culture, gardens and local specialities
Fiumelatte also has a historical connection to cultural history: Leonardo da Vinci mentioned the place under the name “Fiumelaccio” on folio 214 of the Codice Atlantico. At the nearby Castello di Vezio, you can visit the gardens, the underground areas and the ring wall, view works of art and climb the tower with a permanent exhibition about the Lariosaurus.
The terraced grounds of the nearby Villa Monastero include a path around two kilometres long that leads to the nearby hamlet of Fiumelatte. A garden path thus complements the narrower paths by the water. Culinary traditions are also part of the local experience: the programme for the 2025 festival included Canestri and Tortelli della Madonna.
Arriving via Varenna
Varenna is an important point of reference for finding your way around Fiumelatte. Car ferries connect Varenna with the municipalities of Bellagio, Cadenabbia and Menaggio. The Varenna–Esino Lario–Perledo station for train services is located in the Varenna area. Together with the walking routes between Varenna and Fiumelatte, this provides various ways to plan your stay around the lake, paths and excursion destinations.
