Holiday apartment in Udine: culture, history and nature

Udine combines striking buildings, museums and historic squares with green open spaces. Castello di Udine stands on a hill above the old town and is an important starting point for exploring the city’s culture. People with reduced mobility can reach the castle via lifts accessed from Vicolo Sottomonte.

Culture

At Castello di Udine, the Galleria d’Arte Antica displays important works of art from the 14th to the 19th century, including paintings by Carpaccio, Caravaggio and Tiepolo. The Museo della Fotografia is also located in the castle and features 19th- and 20th-century photographs by photographers who worked in Friuli, including Pignat, Bujatti and Brisighelli. The Chiesa di Sant'Antonio abate contains the tombs of four of the last Patriarchs of Aquileia. The church’s original structure was Gothic and dated from the 14th century; it was consecrated in 1354. The Palazzo Savorgnan della Bandiera contains secular frescoes from the second half of the 14th century.

Casa Cavazzini is a historic 16th-century palace and houses the Museo d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea. A 16th-century Venetian cistern can also be seen there through a glass floor. The Cattedrale di Santa Maria Annunziata was built from 1236 onwards. People with reduced mobility can access it via a ramp on the north side. The Museo Etnografico del Friuli presents collections relating to the traditions, folk culture and history of Friuli. The Museo Friulano di Storia Naturale is a permanent institution that researches, collects, preserves, interprets and exhibits its own heritage.

Nature

Parco del Cormor is Udine’s largest park and covers around 30 hectares. Its amenities include densely planted woodland, open meadows, a viewpoint, paths and small roads, as well as a children’s playground. The park is also accessible to people with disabilities.

For cycle tourism, the FVG1 Ciclovia Alpe Adria crosses Udine. It forms part of a route connecting Austria and northern Slovenia with the Friulian Adriatic coast.

Events and culinary delights

The Far East Film Festival takes place every year over nine screening days at the Teatro Nuovo Giovanni da Udine. The programme includes retrospectives, talks with leading figures from Asian cinema and a themed meeting about Asian cinema every afternoon. Friuli DOC includes concerts, performances, product discoveries, tastings, workshops, sporting activities, children’s activities, as well as stalls and encounters.

Piazza Matteotti, also known as Piazza San Giacomo, is an open-air salon surrounded by colourful buildings and elegant arcades, with tables belonging to historic cafés. A Tajut is a small glass of Friulian white wine served in Udine’s historic centre with ham and typical Friulian cheeses. The «Percorso Tiepolo» leads to Tiep(o)lo’s surviving works in Udine, located in the castle, the Museo Diocesano, the Chiesa dell’Oratorio della Purità and the cathedral; admission to the Oratorio della Purità is free.
