Churches, Monastery and Castle

The historic centre of Maruggio developed around the Chiesa Madre Santissima Natività di Maria Vergine, which is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The church was built in the 15th century and remodelled in later centuries. The Convento dei frati minori osservanti was built between 1534 and 1575 and arranged around a cloister. This four-winged portico has arcades supported by powerful octagonal Carparo columns, as well as groin vaults.

The Chiesa di Sant’Eligio e della SS. Annunziata was built in the 16th century in the architectural style typical of the Renaissance. It has pedestrian access; there are no particular obstacles for people with disabilities or reduced mobility. The Chiesa di Santa Maria del Tempio is one of the architectural and artistic traces of Maruggio’s historical past. According to tradition, the Chiesa della Madonna del Verde was commissioned by the Knights of Malta.

In the area around Maruggio, the Foresta pietrificata di Torre dell'Ovo features visible trunks and branches, some of which are still standing upright.

Summer Festivals between Tradition and the Sea

Maruggio’s patron saint festival takes place on 13 and 14 July. It includes a procession, illuminations, a marching band and a market with stalls that bring the historic centre to life.

The Festa della Madonna dell’Alto Mare is celebrated at Ferragosto. It is associated with a votive chapel on the Duna Capoccia-Scorcialupi, where the Madonna is venerated as the patron saint of sailors and people of the sea. The procession at sea travels from the port of Campomarino to its votive chapel, where it is welcomed by a fireworks display.
