Poggiardo combines impressive religious buildings, Messapian history and a landscape of pine trees, olive trees and caves. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Poggiardo, you will find various themes here to help plan your trip: historic sites within the municipality, nature experiences and a railway connection for exploring the area south of Otranto.

Holiday apartment in Poggiardo: discover culture and history

The Chiesa Matrice di San Salvatore is the oldest religious building in Poggiardo. Its origins date back at least to the 14th century, while the façade acquired a typically Baroque style in the 18th century. Inside, the church has a single-nave layout in the shape of a Latin cross, with three deep chapels. The ceiling is decorated with frescoes and Baroque stucco work.

Another historical trace lies in the heart of the town: the Cripta di Santa Maria degli Angeli is located beneath Via Don Minzoni, near the Chiesa Madre and the Palazzo Ducale dei Guarini. It is one of Poggiardo’s oldest monuments; the old settlement developed around it in earlier times. At the same time, the crypt is an example of the underground churches and crypts characteristic of Salento in the area around Otranto.

The Palazzo Guarini also tells the story of a transformation in architectural history. It was initially built in the mid-14th century as a military building, with primarily defensive and surveillance functions. A large round tower dominates the complex. In the 15th century, it was gradually transformed from a fortified structure into a splendid aristocratic residence; the former moat was filled in and turned into a citrus grove. Small towers, known as the „Sentinelle“, also shape the appearance of Piazza Episcopo.

Vaste and the Messapian past

Vaste is a district of Poggiardo and an important archaeological site bearing witness to the Messapian civilisation. The Museo Archeologico della Civiltà Messapica is housed in the 16th-century Palazzo Baronale on Piazza Dante in Vaste. Its exhibition follows a chronological path from places of worship of the Archaic and Hellenistic periods through to the Middle Ages.

The Parco dei Guerrieri di Vaste is part of this historical setting. It extends over more than 20 hectares from the settlement of Vaste to the Serre of Poggiardo and includes evidence of Messapian culture. At the entrance are faithful replicas of the Ipogeo delle Cariatidi. From the terrace, visitors can view the remains of the ancient city walls. Here, within the municipality, a museum, archaeological site and landscape come together directly.

Nature among pine forest, caves and traces of old industry

The Pineta dei Marirossi comprises a 16-hectare man-made forest and numerous caves. Pine trees and olive trees grow there alongside wild orchids. The reddish colour of the soil is largely due to rich bauxite deposits that are no longer being exploited today. At the entrance to the Grotta Marirossi, which is also known as the „Grotta che respira“, a continuous flow of air indicates the special nature of this place.

Northwest of the Pineta dei Marirossi, a path begins that combines natural landscapes with traces of industrial archaeology and leads to the Querceto dei Reali. Villa Episcopo offers another green aspect: it includes a garden with small paths, numerous plants typical of the Mediterranean region and small, picturesque caves. When choosing accommodation in Poggiardo, you can therefore consider whether cultural discoveries, nature observation or paths through a landscape rich in history should be the main focus.

Railway connection for exploring the surrounding area

The FSE railway station in Poggiardo can be used as a railway connection for exploring the area south of Otranto. This complements the various ways of considering Poggiardo as a base for days spent between local history, Vaste and the landscapes of Marirossi.
