Holiday apartment in Lequile: Churches, festivals and the Salento landscape
Lequile lies in the Valle della Cupa in the heart of Salento. The town combines religious landmarks, Baroque architecture and an agricultural landscape. This makes it possible to combine a focus on culture with a perspective shaped by the surrounding landscape.
San Vito and the religious landmarks
The Chiesa di San Vito Martire houses a relic and a wooden statue of San Vito, the patron saint of Lequile, which is held in particularly high esteem by the local population. The Guglia di San Vito stands in a public square in Lequile. The local sculptor Oronzo Rossi built it from Lecce stone in 1694; it is topped by a statue of San Vito.
Churches with Baroque and historical details
The Chiesa di San Nicola, also known as the Chiesa del Redentore, is a 17th-century Baroque church with a distinctive dome covered in multicoloured majolica tiles. It is used for special liturgical occasions, cultural events and guided tours. The Chiesa di Santa Maria di Loreto was built in 1597. Its portal features Corinthian columns and a coat of arms bearing a rampant lion.
The Convento di San Francesco was built between 1613 and 1619 as a Franciscan complex with a church and the associated monastery buildings. The Chiesa di San Basilio Magno is one of the oldest religious buildings in Lequile. It bears witness to the town's medieval history and to the Basilian monastic tradition in Salento.
Palaces, books and chapels
The Palazzo dei principi Saluzzo, now Palazzo De Palma, was built in the second half of the 17th century, probably based on designs by Mauro and Emanuele Manieri. Its interior includes an oratory, a library with valuable incunabula and old books from Apulia, as well as a chapel dedicated to San Giorgio. Palazzo Andrioli is housed in a historic building dating from the late 16th century.
Menhir and the rural landscape of Salento
The Aia della Corte menhir is a 2.85-metre-high monolith made of Lecce stone. It was discovered in 1922 and bears carvings and incised crosses on its surfaces. The menhir stands in an agricultural setting that preserves features of Salento's traditional rural landscape. Alongside its churches and palaces, Lequile therefore also reveals a side directly connected to the cultural landscape.
Festivals between faith and local tradition
The Festa Patronale in honour of San Vito Martire traditionally takes place on the fourth Sunday in June. It combines solemn religious ceremonies with a secular programme of tradition, music and fireworks. The Festa della Madonna della Stella also includes the traditional Festa te lu Puruccinu, during which hard-boiled eggs are sampled with fresh cheese and local wine.
A holiday apartment in Lequile is particularly suitable for your plans if you would like to focus on the town's various facets. Religious art and architecture, historic spaces, local festival culture and the rural landscape of Salento offer different starting points for shaping your holiday days.
