Hiking between the Serra and the Sea

The Sentiero della Vecchia Ferrovia and the Anello delle Vie del Sale run through Corsano. The Sentiero della Vecchia Ferrovia leads through Corsano; the former disused railway line has been transformed into a path through the Mediterranean maquis, with bridges and tunnels offering panoramic views. The former railway line thus brings an element of transport history into the landscape. The Vie del Sale nature trail begins after the Cappella di Santa Maura and ends at the Torre Specchia Grande. Walkers and cyclists meet at the Cappella di Santa Maura almost every day.

Cliffs and Coastal Landscape

The coastal area of Corsano encompasses rugged cliffs with Mediterranean maquis, holm oaks and stone pines. The coastal vegetation follows the rocky section down to the sea and gives the landscape its Mediterranean character. The historical and cultural circuit leads to the equipped picnic area in the Zona Pozze; within the circuit, it provides a specific place to take a break.

Churches and Historic Sites

The Chiesa di Santa Sofia dates from the late Byzantine period and originally had the floor plan of a Greek cross. It is currently closed to the public because urgent restoration work is required on the foundations, which rest on a layer of sand.

The Cappella di San Bartolo was built in 1714. The chapel contains a recently restored painting and a statue of the saint to whom it is dedicated. The restored painting adds another historical accent to the chapel built in 1714. The Congrega dell'Immacolata probably dates from the second half of the 18th century. The Chiesa di San Biagio gives its name to the square where it stands. The Palazzo Feudale Capece includes a hanging garden and a citrus grove.

Festivals and Local Memory

In Corsano, Saint Maura is celebrated every year on 1 May with a mass and a festival in a rocky landscape. The Sagra Agreste is listed for August in the Zona Pozze of Corsano. The Carnival of Corsano and Capo di Leuca is listed for February or March in Corsano. The nickname “carcagni tosti” used for the inhabitants of Corsano is associated with the former practice of walking barefoot across the rocks of natural salt pans. The reference to the natural salt pans anchors the name for the inhabitants in a specific landscape practice.
