Kozani invites you to discover history through its buildings and collections: mansions, frescoes and museums offer different ways to explore the city and the wider Kozani destination. If you enjoy choosing between architecture, archaeology and cultural history, you’ll find a varied range of themes to help you plan your trip.

Mansions and Historic Buildings in Kozani

Kozani’s mansions display typical features of traditional Macedonian architecture. They are usually two storeys, less often three, and their design is strongly defensive and inward-facing. The most elaborate rooms were mainly on the first floor, where guests were received and celebrations held. Ornamental plasterwork decorates the walls and fireplaces; richly decorated wooden ceilings feature geometric patterns made from thin strips.

The Grigorios Vourkas Mansion is an example of Kozani’s secular architecture from the Ottoman period. It was completed on 10 June 1748 and still has its original boundary wall and traditional courtyard. This building brings together a specific construction date and preserved architectural details.

The Church of Agios Nikolaos also tells a story of architectural and artistic history: it was completely rebuilt on a larger scale in 1721 following the issuance of a new firman. The brothers Theodoros and Nikolaos from Ioannina painted the frescoes inside the church in 1730. Kozani’s clock offers another notable date: its current seven-storey form dates from 1939.

Museums: From Archaeology to Everyday Culture

Kozani’s Historical-Folklore and Natural History Museum brings together natural history, archaeological-Byzantine, historical and folklore exhibitions. It also includes a modern art gallery, as well as stamp and radio collections. This range makes the museum a place to explore different subjects side by side.

The Archaeological Collection of Kozani focuses on the wider area: through its rich collection, it shows settlement and the development of the arts across the broader Kozani region from prehistoric times to the Roman period. The objects on display also include artefacts from Kozani’s classical-period cemetery. The Museum of Pontic Hellenism displays a scale model of traditional buildings from the eastern and western Pontus, along with traditional costumes, agricultural tools and household items. Visits are by prior arrangement.

The Pontic Hellenism Cultural Centre also has a library with rare publications, including books in the Pontic dialect from the 1920s. Another special collection is housed in the Lassani Mansion: the Municipal Map Library of Kozani, where visitors can explore a rare collection of maps of the Greek world. Check current access arrangements before visiting.

Aiani in the Wider Kozani Destination

Looking at the wider Kozani destination, Aiani adds a distinct archaeological focus. Aiani was the historic seat of the Municipality of Kozani and the capital of the ancient kingdom of Elimeia. The Archaeological Museum of Aiani presents finds from ancient Aiani and the Royal Necropolis in six halls, with a tour spanning prehistory to the Roman period. The Royal Necropolis of Aiani was the burial place of the kings of Aiani during the classical and Hellenistic periods and comprises twelve monumental chamber tombs.

Nature experiences are also part of this wider destination: the Chandakas Trail in the Aiani area passes through a green gorge with flowing streams, stone paths and small bridges, leading to a series of natural waterfalls. Trail conditions may vary seasonally. Aiani therefore brings archaeological sites together with a described route through a gorge, while the mansions and collections in the city of Kozani offer their own cultural focus.

These different interests can help guide your choice of holiday rental: consider whether your stay will be shaped mainly by the buildings and collections in the city of Kozani, or also by the attractions of the wider destination. This way, you can focus your accommodation search on the experiences you’d like to include in your trip.
