Discover Western Macedonia: Lakes, Cultural Heritage and Regional Cuisine
Accommodation in Western Macedonia
Western Macedonia combines impressive lake landscapes with traces of Byzantine history, geological features and regional specialities. Between waterside hiking trails, historic sites and tastings, there are many ways to explore the region. When planning your trip, it is worth first deciding whether nature, culture or food and drink should be the focus.
Lakes, trails and distinctive landscapes
The Prespa Lakes are among Europe’s most ecologically valuable wetlands. Prespa National Park is part of the first transboundary protected area in the Balkans. In Prespa, hiking trails run through forests and along the lakes. Organised boat trips depart from Psarades across Great Prespa Lake to hermitages and Byzantine rock paintings. This offers a chance to discover the area on foot or from the water.
Lake Zazari offers a different way to experience nature: you can canoe on calm waters, with views of cormorants, pelicans, mountains and forests. Those interested in the history of the landscape will find another highlight at the Grevena–Kozani Geopark. It has been part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network since 2021. Its distinctive features include the oldest dated rocks in Greece, estimated to be about one billion years old. The geopark offers educational activities, guided field visits and hands-on programmes throughout the year.
History and culture in a variety of places
The region’s history can be explored through a range of landmarks. On the island of Agios Achilleios in Small Prespa Lake, a floating bridge leads to the ruins of a three-aisled basilica dating from the 10th century. In Aiani, the Royal Necropolis comprises twelve monumental chamber tombs. Near Servia, the Byzantine castle town can be explored as an open-air museum along a paved path beside the Byzantine walls.
Nymfaio also brings together several cultural attractions. Since 2000, the House of Nymfaio has been home to the Museum of Silversmithing, Folklore and History. Its extensive collection includes traditional silversmithing tools and works. Nymfaio is also home to the ARCTUROS Bear Information Centre, housed in the historic Nikeios School. The Church of Agios Nikolaos is an important post-Byzantine monument.
In Kastoria, Byzantine monuments and historic mansions sit above Lake Orestiada. Lake Kastoria, also known as Lake Orestiada, is Greece’s seventh-largest natural lake. The Kastoria Aquarium is the largest freshwater aquarium in the Balkans. Those interested in wildlife can also visit the ARCTUROS Bear Sanctuary, where rescued bears live in a 50-acre fenced habitat. The ARCTUROS Wolf and Lynx Sanctuary near Agrapidies is located in a 70-acre oak forest.
Regional products and active excursions
Western Macedonia also offers special opportunities to discover regional products. Prespa beans are a locally produced product with a protected geographical indication. In Lefkara, a local dairy offers tastings of feta, graviera, goat’s cheese and yoghurt. Near Servia, you can join the olive harvest and guided tastings at a farm during the harvest season.
In Amyntaio, wineries welcome visitors for tastings and tours centred on Xinomavro vineyards and the PDO wine tradition. Florina peppers, cheese and pies are served as regional specialities during wine tastings. If food and regional cuisine are important to you, Amyntaio can therefore offer a different focus for your trip from the lakes and cultural destinations.
The Tranos Lakkos mountain hiking trail in the Platanorevma area near Servia passes through gorges and by streams and natural waterfalls. Vasilitsa Mountain Bike Park has two designated trails. Vasilitsa National Ski Centre is accessible via the Egnatia motorway.
