Kato Nestorio invites you to discover its townscape, history and landscape. In Nestório, churches from different periods stand alongside a stone watermill and a cave on Kastro Hill; the Aliakmon connects the town with the river. You can shape your trip around the topics that interest you most: architecture and history, a stroll through the settlement or views of the river landscape.

Between the Settlement and the Aliakmon

Nestório is divided into Upper and Lower Nestório. Lower Nestório extends to the banks of the Aliakmon—a useful landmark if you would like to include the river in your travel plans. At the same time, the settlement preserves its traditional colours and architectural identity. You can stroll through the settlement with its red-tiled roofs; the discovery is not limited to a single building, but also includes the character of the place itself.

This connection can be considered alongside Nestório’s cultural attractions. Rather than viewing the sights only as separate points, you can look for the different traces as you explore: the settlement’s appearance, religious architecture and a building from the age of watermills. This offers several ways to shape a stay that is not focused on just one theme.

Churches, Watermill and History

The Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God is considered the oldest church in Nestório and dates from 1816. The Church of the Archangels is a three-aisled basilica dating from 1858; its features include a carved wooden iconostasis. Three-aisled means that the church interior is divided into a central nave and two side aisles. The two buildings bring different dates and architectural features into focus—a tangible way to explore the town’s architectural history.

The stone Seréni watermill adds another piece of architectural heritage: it dates from the 19th century. The EAM-ELAS-DSE Museum in Nestório offers a different historical perspective. Its archival and photographic material covers DSE activities during the Greek Civil War, mainly in the Grammos region, but also elsewhere. Its regional focus is clear, without limiting the subject to Grammos alone. Together, the church, mill and museum offer different perspectives on architecture and history.

Cave and Music Events

Lamia Cave lies on Kastro Hill above the present-day settlement and can be reached via a paved path. It offers a different perspective from the buildings in town: here, exploring the cave goes hand in hand with its distinctive hillside location. A stroll through the settlement with its red-tiled roofs and the paved path to the cave offer different experiences.

Music and culture can also play a part in your travel plans. River Party is a summer music festival by the river near Nestório. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the event dates. Nearby, the Grammos Festival brings together music, theatre and outdoor activities on the slopes of Grammos. The two events have different focuses: a summer festival by the river and a programme that combines music, theatre and outdoor activities.

Choosing the Right Base

The themes of your trip can help guide your search for a holiday apartment or house. If you are particularly interested in churches, the watermill and the townscape, Nestório’s cultural attractions can take centre stage in your plans. If the Aliakmon is important to you, Lower Nestório’s location reaching the riverbanks is a useful geographical reference point. If you also plan to attend a festival, coordinate your travel dates with its schedule. This way, you can choose a base that suits the experiences you actually want, without combining the townscape, river and cultural attractions into a single excursion itinerary.
