Amíntaion brings together several distinct reasons to visit: the annual trade fair in the town centre, the landscape of the nearby Amyntaio Plateau, and historical traces in the surrounding area. The plateau lies between Lakes Vegoritida and Petron; a Roman town villa was excavated in the area, and Kelli was identified as an ancient settlement. This offers perspectives ranging from a recurring event to nature and activities, as well as different aspects of history. When planning, both a specific time of year and your personal interests are useful starting points.

The trade fair in the first week of October

The Amyntaio Trade Fair takes place every year in the first week of October in the town centre. Market stalls and brass bands are part of the event, along with cultural events; the programme includes theatre performances, art exhibitions and photography exhibitions. The event combines the bustle of the market with several cultural formats. If you are planning a trip specifically for the fair, the first week of October is the key date for your stay and your search for a holiday apartment.

Lakes and activities on the plateau

The Amyntaio Plateau lies between Lakes Vegoritida and Petron; both lakes are part of the Natura 2000 network. The plateau offers opportunities for cycling, hiking, birdwatching, canoeing and surfing. The lakes provide a clear geographical setting for the landscape. Cycling and hiking are land-based activities, birdwatching offers a different focus, while canoeing and surfing add water sports to the range of options.

Roman villa and the Via Egnatia

An unusually large Roman town villa dating from the 2nd century AD was excavated near Amyntaio. It comprised 96 rooms, including baths, a household sanctuary to Zeus and luxurious living areas. This combination makes the complex interesting beyond its size: the rooms bring together living quarters, bathing facilities and places of worship. Kelli was also located in the area and has been identified with the ancient settlement of Kella; it was an important stop on the historic Via Egnatia. While the villa offers a perspective on ancient residential architecture, Kelli draws attention to the role of a stopping point along the historic route.

Winegrowing in the Amyntaio region

The regional perspective also extends to winegrowing. Wineries in the Amyntaio region welcome visitors for tastings and tours. The focus is on the vineyards and winegrowing traditions developed over generations. For current arrangements, contact the individual winery directly.

The distinction between the reasons to visit is clear: the fair has a fixed date, while the plateau, ancient history and wineries offer thematic focuses. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide whether you want to plan your stay around the fair or whether nature, history or winegrowing will be the deciding factor.
