Vari on Syros is a coastal destination where Vári Beach offers a clear point of reference. The beach is on a small cove, 1 km from the village of the same name. The village of Vári lies directly behind the beach. Sun loungers and umbrellas are available on the beach. If these amenities are important for your plans, check their current availability before your visit.

If you have your own boat or rent one, you can anchor at the nearby beaches of Achladi or Fabrica. This gives you different options for planning your day: spending time at the beach, or anchoring at either of the two beaches with your own or a rented boat. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider which of these coastal settings better suits your holiday interests.

Culture and History on Syros

If you would like to include cultural history in your travel plans alongside the coast, Syros offers a range of topics spanning theatre, art, architecture and archaeology. This island perspective complements the specific beach and boating options in Vari without tying them to a single itinerary.

The Apollon Theatre and Its History

The Apollon Theatre hosts theatrical performances, artistic events and international festivals. These include opera, music and dance festivals featuring local and international artists. If a particular festival affects your travel plans, check the dates for your preferred travel period. The theatre's construction history is also well documented: it was built between 1862 and 1864 to designs by Italian city architect Pietro Sambo.

The theatre houses a small exhibition commemorating its history. It includes works by local and other artists, historical posters and programmes, manuscripts, theatre publications, photographs, and objects of significance to theatre history. Alongside the programme of events, the exhibition also focuses on records of the building's own history.

Archaeological Sites and Collections

The Archaeological Museum of Syros was founded in 1834–1835 as the central museum of the Cyclades. It displays finds from Kastri and Chalandriani, as well as sculptures, inscriptions and tombstones from the ancient city of Syros. The collections thus bring together finds from prehistoric sites and evidence from the ancient city.

Kastri and Chalandriani are on the northeastern coast of Apano Meria on Syros and are among the most important prehistoric sites in the Aegean. The fortified settlement of Kastri dates to approximately 2300–2200 BC. Its layout includes a low outer rampart, a main wall with horseshoe-shaped towers, and an arched wall on the hill. These architectural features give the prehistoric site a distinctive character, while the museum collection also features finds from Kastri and Chalandriani.

Churches and Architecture

The church complex of Agios Georgios stands on the summit of Ano Syros. It was built between 1832 and 1834 by Hadjisimos Nikolaos from Tinos and is a three-aisled basilica with a porch of five arches. The Church of Panagia Episkopiani in Piskopio is also one of the notable monuments of Syros. The two buildings offer different examples of religious architecture, without equating their individual features.

Ermoupoli is the capital of Syros and the Cyclades. The city's Industrial Museum is housed in four different historic buildings. Also in Ermoupoli, the Dormition of the Virgin icon by Domenikos Theotokopoulos, known as El Greco, is displayed in the church of the same name. The icon is painted on wood in egg tempera and is considered particularly important for understanding the artist's development.

Ermoupoli is also home to the Ottoman bathhouse in the bed of the Lalakia stream. It is a unique example of this building type on Syros and is of notable architectural significance. Theatres, archaeological sites, churches, collections and historic buildings thus bring different aspects of the island to the fore. When deciding where to stay, you can consider the beach and boating options in Vari as your coastal focus, and Syros's cultural history as another area of interest for your trip.
