Syros: Theater, History and Church Art
Accommodation in Syros
On Syros, the sights range from prehistoric sites to a 19th-century theater and an icon by El Greco. Many of the cultural sites described here are in Ermoupoli, the capital of Syros and the Cyclades. When planning your trip, you can first consider whether you are particularly interested in theater, archaeological history or religious buildings.
Theater and Archaeology in Ermoupoli
The Apollo Theater hosts theater performances, artistic events and international festivals. These include opera, music and dance festivals featuring local and international artists. The program therefore includes a range of performing arts; no specific festival date is implied. If you are interested in cultural events, you can take this variety into account when planning your stay.
The history of the building can also be traced in detail: the Apollo Theater was built between 1862 and 1864 to designs by Italian city architect Pietro Sambo. A small exhibition recalls the theater’s history. It features works by local and other artists, historical posters and programs, manuscripts, theater publications, photographs, and objects of significance to theater history. The performances and the record of the building’s development thus offer distinct aspects to explore.
Another focal point is the Archaeological Museum of Syros. It was founded in 1834–1835 as the central museum of the Cyclades. The exhibition includes finds from Kastri and Chalandriani, as well as sculptures, inscriptions and tombstones from the ancient city of Syros. Visitors interested in archaeology can therefore encounter both finds from two prehistoric sites and objects from the ancient city.
Prehistoric Sites and Historic Buildings
Kastri and Chalandriani lie on the northeast coast of Apano Meria on Syros and are among the most important prehistoric sites in the Aegean. The fortified settlement of Kastri dates approximately to 2300–2200 BC. Its architectural features include a low outer wall, a main wall with horseshoe-shaped towers, and an arched wall on the hill. These details bring the prehistoric past to life: Kastri is known not only as an archaeological site, but also for its described fortifications.
Religious buildings also offer distinct architectural points of interest. The church complex of Agios Georgios stands at the summit of Ano Syros. Hadjisimos Nikolaos from Tinos built it between 1832 and 1834. The church is a three-aisled basilica, and its porch has five arches. Ano Syros, a traditional medieval settlement, is under special state protection. If you are interested in historic settlement landscapes and church architecture, both this status and the site’s specific architectural features are among its distinguishing characteristics.
In Piskopio, the church of Panagia Episkopiani is an important monument on Syros. In Ermoupoli, an icon of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, attributed to Domenikos Theotokopoulos, known as El Greco, is displayed in the church of the same name. Executed in egg tempera on wood, it is considered particularly important for understanding the painter’s artistic development. Church art on Syros can thus also be explored through a single work and its significance.
The Industrial Museum of Ermoupoli is housed in four different historic buildings in the city. Another distinct type of architectural heritage is the Ottoman bathhouse in the riverbed of Lalakia in Ermoupoli. It is considered a unique example of this building type on Syros and is of notable architectural significance. Together with the theater, museum and churches, these sites offer several clearly distinct cultural interests to help guide your choice of location for a holiday rental.
