Agios Nikolaos offers a variety of attractions: vessels dating from the 3rd millennium BC, Byzantine church art, a centrally located lake and the organised beach of Ammoudi with clear water. When planning your trip, you can focus on culture or time by the water. When choosing a holiday apartment, it is worth first considering which of these aspects you would like to shape your stay.

Museums and archaeological finds

The Folklore Museum of Agios Nikolaos was founded in 1978 by the Cultural Association of Eastern Crete. The Archaeological Museum began operating as early as 1969. The years refer to different events: a founding and the start of operations.

The display cases at the Archaeological Museum contain more than 1,500 vessels dating from the 3rd millennium BC. They are joined by gold and bronze finds described as the oldest on Crete. The types of finds and their precise dating give the town's archaeological heritage a distinct focus.

Ancient site and Byzantine churches

The archaeological site of ancient Kamara lies in the centre of Agios Nikolaos, parallel to Roussou Koundourou Street. It complements the museum collections with a site steeped in ancient history. This allows you to explore different aspects of the town's cultural heritage: objects in museum display cases or the history of an archaeological site in the centre.

The Church of St Nicholas stands in a small bay where ships called during the Byzantine and Venetian periods. It is a single-nave domed church and was probably built before the Arab conquest of Crete in 827/8. Its wall paintings comprise two layers. The older one is aniconic—that is, it contains no figurative depictions—and dates from the period of Iconoclasm. The building's design, historical context and paintings offer different ways to explore this church.

The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity is also located in the centre of Agios Nikolaos. It is entirely decorated with paintings and displays both the Cretan and Macedonian traditions of Byzantine icon painting. In contrast to the older aniconic layer in the Church of St Nicholas, the focus here is on icon painting in two named traditions.

Lake, beach and active exploration

Lake Voulismeni lies in the centre of Agios Nikolaos and adds another scenic dimension to choosing where to stay. The organised beach of Ammoudi is in town and has clear water. If you would rather focus your trip on culture or time at the beach, these places offer two distinct options.

In the municipality of Agios Nikolaos, sea kayaking offers a way to explore remote places of unspoilt natural beauty. This activity complements the appeal of the lake and beach with an active way to discover nature. It takes place within the municipal area, making this another factor to consider when planning your trip.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Agios Nikolaos, what you want from your trip may be the deciding factor: would you like it to focus mainly on archaeological finds and church art, or would you rather prioritise Ammoudi and time by the water? If sea kayaking is also of interest, include the municipal area as a separate consideration in your plans.
