Lasithi brings together gorges and caves, archaeological sites, Cretan traditions and experiences on the water. If you’re looking for a holiday rental, you might first consider which of these aspects you’d like to shape your stay: nature trails, historical sites, traditional arts or activities by the sea. The area’s distinctive attractions offer different focal points and plenty to inspire a varied trip.

Landscape and trails

Most of the wider Lasithi area lies within the Sitia Geopark, which has been part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network since 2015. The Havgas Gorge offers a specific way to experience the natural landscape: it is about 4 km long, and its lower section is relatively flat and accessible to everyone. The gorge is also part of the E4. When planning an excursion in the area, you can distinguish between the lower section and the long-distance hiking trail without treating them as the same thing.

Trapeza Cave, also known as Kronio, also brings nature and history together. It is considered an important archaeological and cultural monument of Crete. Its entrance can be reached after about a five-minute climb along an uphill paved path with steps. This information helps you gauge what the approach is like: the path climbs and includes steps. The approximate time refers to the climb to the entrance.

Cretan culture and history

The Seli Ambelou windmill complex offers a glimpse of traditional arts. It was designated a work of art in 1986 and is considered the largest windmill complex in Crete and Greece. The Folklore Museum of Agios Georgios offers another way to explore local history. It is housed in a house dating from the early 20th century, the former school building and two newer buildings. Its collections include handicrafts, old books, weapons, paintings and wood carvings, among other items. The variety of exhibits makes the museum a place to explore different forms of craftsmanship and heritage.

The archaeological sites also tell stories of different periods and beliefs. The Palace of Zakros was an important harbour and a trading gateway to the East. It covers more than 8,000 m² and is located at the outlet of the famous Gorge of the Dead. The myth that Rhea gave birth to Zeus there is central to Diktaion Andron. Spinalonga, meanwhile, was a fortress during Venetian and Turkish rule and later served as a leper colony until the mid-20th century. The island is reached by boat. These sites offer different historical perspectives to choose from for a trip: a Minoan palace, mythological tradition or Spinalonga’s layered later history.

Experiences and choosing a base

If you’d like to focus on activities on the water, there are several options: snorkelling off Koufonissi (Lefki) lets you see flooded sections of ancient settlements. Surfing is possible at Kato Zakros Beach; Kato Zakros can be reached by bus. The port of Agios Nikolaos mainly receives cruise ships. These suggestions offer different ways to include the water and other travel experiences in your plans.

Lasinthos combines a nature park, zoo, active traditional workshops, a restaurant and traditional guesthouses. It offers interactive activities and attractions focused on reviving traditional Cretan arts and techniques. Dishes are served according to the Cretan diet; many ingredients, such as olive oil, herbs, vegetables and fruit, are produced on site. These highlights can help you choose places that suit your travel plans, but they do not imply a shared route.
