Katzwinkel lies at the confluence of the Burbach, Lanzbach and Ringelbach streams. In the town center, they form the Gäsbach. The town extends across an elevation range of approximately 460 to 490 meters above sea level.

Nature and Trails

Katzwinkel has around 7.5 kilometers of municipal hiking trails. The town is also connected to the cycling network via the Ahr-Moselle Cycle Route and Cycle Route No. 30. The Karl Kaufmann Trail, the Eifelverein’s main hiking trail No. 2, runs for approximately 1.5 kilometers through the Katzwinkel municipal area.

More than one-third of Katzwinkel’s 385-hectare municipal area is forested. A distinctive natural feature is the Teufelsstein: an approximately two-meter-wide, rounded mass with a rough surface made of solidified lava. The Vulkaneifel is considered a landscape characterized by plateaus, dense forests, clear streams, fragrant meadows and villages.

In addition to the Eifelsteig, eight other Vulkaneifel trails are regarded as well-equipped hiking routes meeting high quality standards.

Culture and History

The Afelskreuz is located approximately 1.5 kilometers northwest of Katzwinkel and can be reached via Hiking Trail 7. In the forest on the ridge between Uess and the Lieserbach stands a wooden beam cross measuring 3.30 meters. It is located on an old Roman military road connected to a historic pilgrimage route to the tomb of Saint Matthias in Trier. A moderately difficult circular hike covering 9.9 kilometers passes by the cross.

The Catholic branch church of St. Catherine in Katzwinkel is a hall church with three bays dating from 1810 and was altered around 1950/60. East of the built-up area, on the road to Uess, stands the Heiligenhäuschen, a round, enclosed masonry structure.

Archaeological finds indicate that people had already settled in the Katzwinkel area more than 4,000 years ago. Finds at Scheidheck document settlement during the Roman period from 50 BC to AD 500. From 1950 onward, under the Uess pastor Johannes Tempel, efforts were made to build a new chapel at another suitable location in Katzwinkel.

Local Life

On Whit Monday, a chain of blown-out eggs from the Eiersingen tradition hangs in the center of Katzwinkel. The collected eggs are pierced and blown out, then prepared as scrambled eggs seasoned with herbs, baked in a pan and eaten on bread.

Surrounding Area

The Moselle is approximately 20 kilometers from Katzwinkel and offers excursion destinations with vineyards and castles. Most of the Eifel maars are no more than 10 kilometers from Katzwinkel.
