Kaub’s historic old town is characterized by narrow lanes, half-timbered houses, and a medieval atmosphere. Sections of the old town wall can still be walked along.
The Blücher Museum presents contemporary memorabilia, pictures, information panels, and a tin-figure diorama about Blücher’s crossing of the Rhine near Kaub in 1813. An associated interactive hiking experience begins at the Blücher Monument and follows the historical events through Kaub.
Gutenfels Castle has a core dating from around 1220 and belongs to the type of late Romanesque hilltop castle. The southern extension of Kaub’s fortifications ended at the Dicken Turm, a round tower with a twelve-sided wooden battlement walkway. The Weseler Turm and the Philippinenburg also remain preserved among Kaub’s historic fortifications.
The Simultaneous Church of St. Trinitatis and St. Nicholas unites the Protestant and Catholic churches under one roof. Its 27-meter-high tower was formerly part of the town fortifications. A copy of the Madonna of Kaub can be seen in the church.
Kaub’s museums also cover the traditions of slate mining and Rhine pilots: the Slate Mining Museum displays objects and tools used by miners as well as scenes of slate production, while the Pilot Museum explains the work of the former Kaub Rhine pilots.
Viticulture in Kaub is documented in a deed of donation dating from 983. Kaub’s vineyard terraces use dry-stone walls built without mortar. The vineyard of Gutenfels Castle is described as one of the best wine-growing sites on the Middle Rhine.
The historic town can be explored on the Kaub Cultural Hiking Trail on a circular route lasting around two hours. The Gutenfels Trail is part of the Kaub Cultural Hiking Trail and climbs through newly planted vineyards to Gutenfels Castle. The Rhine Camino, a pilgrimage route on the German Way of St. James, leads from Oberlahnstein to Kaub.
A small passenger ferry runs from Kaub’s Rhine riverbank to the island fortress of Pfalzgrafenstein. Mittelrhein Rafting is a rafting activity associated with Kaub.
