The former Cistercian nunnery was once the spiritual centre of the region. A Cistercian nunnery was founded in Kumbd shortly after 1183 and settled with nuns from Aulhausen in the Rheingau. The foundation was confirmed in 1196 by Archbishop Konrad of Mainz. After the death of the last abbess, the nunnery was dissolved in 1573. The church was already a ruin by 1706.
At the old monastery churchyard, information boards explain Klosterkumbd’s 1,000-year history. The village’s renovated bakehouse is also one of the local features: it is used several times a year for baking bread.
The ponds have retained their original shape and have been left to nature. Thus, alongside the Kondbach, the landscape of Klosterkumbd also contains bodies of water in their unaltered form.
The Klingelfloß Trail is approximately eight kilometres long and classified as an easy, family-friendly walking route. A former forestry workers’ hut is located beside the Klingelfloß Pond. It was formerly used by hunters and forestry workers for shelter from bad weather.
In the monastery district of Klosterkumbd, the route passes the remains of the former monastery. It starts at the Birkenhof Hotel in Klosterkumbd and ends at the Gesellschaftsmühle country inn in Laubach. The route initially follows natural meadows as well as paths and unpaved tracks; it then crosses Klosterkumbd state forest.
