Unkel is located on the Lower Middle Rhine, around 20 kilometres south of Bonn, and is part of the Rhine-Westerwald Nature Park. The town lies on the eastern bank of the Rhine, between Bad Honnef to the north and Linz am Rhein to the south.
Unkel is also part of the broader Lower Middle Rhine region and lies on the outer edge of Bonn’s catchment area.
The area includes the Linz-Hönningen valley, the broad Linz terraces near Bruchhausen, and part of the volcanic Rhine-Westerwald ridge. The highest point is the 430.2-metre-high Asberg.
Arenfels Castle and Rheineck Castle are located in the surroundings of Unkel. Broderkons Berg, Drachenfels and Großer Ölberg are also nearby.
The wider regional area also includes Blankenberg Castle, Neuerburg Castle Ruins and the Gänsehalsturm tower.
