Weibern is known for a tuff stone tradition associated with Roman and medieval construction. The stone quarried locally was used for fine sculptural work and church buildings.
At the Steinmetzbahnhof, a museum presents an extensive collection of rocks from the Eastern Eifel and explains the cultural and historical significance of Weibern tuff stone. A quarry model made by the stonemasons’ association is also on display there.
The Steinsägehaus houses a workshop where demonstrations and stone-carving courses take place. Weibern’s museum island at the Steinsägehaus includes a large covered stone saw and a derrick crane. The Weibern open-air museum is designed to showcase the techniques used to quarry tuff stone, as well as the stages of work from the quarry to the workshop huts.
The Tourist Information Office regularly offers guided tours of Weibern’s tuff stone quarries. The Tuff Stone Museum is open by prior appointment.
The Tuff Stone Trail – Geopath Route O – is a moderately difficult 17-kilometre hike. It follows historic quarries and tuff stone houses to Weibern. The route includes a short detour to the large tuff stone walls at Lärchenley.
The Tuff Stone Trail reaches the disused Alter Berg tuff stone quarry in Weibern, where exposed quarry walls can be viewed. Nearby, the route continues to the Wolf pumice quarry on the Hatzenfeld. From there, the geological view extends across the volcanic Eastern Eifel.
The Steinmetzbahnhof, Weibern bus stop is 60 metres from the Tuff Stone Museum.
