Höhbeck: Nature and History on the Geest Island

Höhbeck is an elevated Geest island in the Elbe glacial valley, with its highest point reaching 75.6 metres. Hiking: circular route or Explorer Trail

For a longer hike, the Höhbeck-Elbholz Trail passes through Vietze and then climbs through dense woodland onto Höhbeck. The circular hiking route is 25.94 kilometres long. If you are looking for a shorter loop, the Explorer Trail offers a different distance: it is about six kilometres long and climbs from the Elbe Riverside Trail in Vietze through mixed woodland, with 20 stops along the way. At the Höhbeck Museum in Vietze, photographs and models tell the story of the development of early Elbe navigation, from cargo barges and steamships to motor vessels. Charlemagne had the “Castellum Hohbuoki” built near the Elbe towards the end of the 8th century to defend against the Slavs. The Vietze Schanze, located south of Vietze on Höhbeck, is a separate site and dates to around 800 AD. Remains of the ramparts are visible at the Schwedenschanze. The castle site on Höhbeck has information boards, guardian figures, signposts and a shelter. According to an official announcement dated 26 August 2026, the tower at the Schwedenschanze was open.
