Experience forests and nature in different ways

The Göhrde is the largest contiguous mixed forest in northern Germany. Many protected areas in the Göhrde Forest provide a habitat for numerous rare and endangered species. Arranging these activities in advance is part of the offer and should be factored into your plans.

The border and nature trail from Schnackenburg to Gartow combines information about habitats and local flora and fauna with two viewing platforms. Ten information panels explain the area’s natural environment, and the platforms offer unobstructed views. This adds specific information about the habitats and species found there to your outing.

History to see and discover

In the Rundlingsdorf Lübeln village, the Wendland Rundlingsmuseum features a farmstead as an open-air museum. Traditional crafts are brought to life in the pottery, blacksmith’s shop, bakehouse and wheelwright’s workshop. The different workshops give your museum visit several concrete themes to explore together with children, too, if you are interested in crafts and everyday history.

The Hitzacker Archaeological Centre is also an open-air museum. People were already using its grounds around 4,000 years ago. Three reconstructed longhouses and numerous interactive stations give visitors a glimpse into the everyday lives of early people. Cyclists can use lockable bicycle boxes, luggage storage and an e-bike charging station. This makes the centre different from a conventional exhibition visit: reconstructed buildings and interactive stations are the main focus, alongside the approximate historical period.

At the Waldemarturm in Dannenberg, several floors feature artefacts and exhibits from the town’s early history, changing art exhibitions and a permanent exhibition on flooding. The Wustrow Museum takes a different approach: it is housed in a grand residence built for merchant Wilhelm Lüring in the late 19th century. Its changing exhibitions cover the more recent history of the Wendland region, as well as social, political and economic history. Kulturelle Landpartie and excursions on the water

Since 1989, artists and craftspeople have opened the gates to their farmyards and studios each year as part of the Kulturelle Landpartie, between Ascension Day and Pentecost. They present their work over twelve days. During the festival, visitors can follow suggested cycling routes to reach numerous exhibitions and theatre performances. If this cultural programme is the reason for your trip, the period between Ascension Day and Pentecost is an important part of your planning; museums and nature experiences offer their own alternatives if you have other priorities.

Guided canoe tours are another experience to consider. In good weather, Albia-Kanu offers daily trips from Hitzacker to Neu Darchau at 10:00 and 13:00, and from Damnatz to Neu Darchau at 10:00. The tours therefore differ in their starting point and departure time. If you would like to include a canoe trip in your plans, take these specific times and the weather condition into account when planning your trip.
