The Fagus Factory and its exhibition
The Fagus Factory was built between 1910 and 1915 to plans by Walter Gropius and is considered a pioneering work of modern architecture. On 25 June 2011, UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site. The exhibition covers 3,000 square metres across eleven floors. Its exhibits explore the factory’s origins, modern solid-wood processing and footwear fashion of the past century. It thus spans topics from architectural history to a manufacturing process and fashion. These varied themes offer several ways to explore the factory beyond its architecture. Buildings and town history
The other buildings also represent distinct historical periods. Alfeld Town Hall has had its present appearance as a Weser Renaissance building since 1586. The Gothic hall church of St. Nicolai stands right next door; it was already an archdeaconry church in 1205. The two neighbouring buildings therefore bring Weser Renaissance and Gothic architecture together—a tangible comparison for anyone who enjoys recognising architectural styles in individual buildings. The Latin School, built in 1610, is also a Renaissance building and houses the Museum of the City of Alfeld (Leine). A permanent exhibition there presents the town’s history, while temporary exhibitions are held in the lower rooms. The Fillerturm offers another glimpse into Alfeld’s medieval past: it is the only surviving defensive tower of the medieval town fortifications. Inside, 88 steps lead to the viewing platform of the 22.32-metre-high tower. You can visit the Fillerturm by prior arrangement. Taken together, the historical traces range from a medieval church and town fortifications to Renaissance buildings and the modern architecture of the Fagus Factory.
Landscape and nature observation
There are also different ways to experience Alfeld outdoors. The 5.5-kilometre Ortsberg cultural landscape trail invites you to discover the distinctive landscape on foot. In the district of Langenholzen, the discovery tower—a former transformer tower—has been developed into a key starting point for nature observations and excursions. Access is restricted during the bird breeding season. The trail offers a set walking route, while the tower focuses on nature observation and excursions—two different reasons to spend time outdoors.
