World Heritage and Architecture in Hildesheim
St. Mary's Cathedral houses unique art treasures and a 1,000-year-old rosebush. Among its outstanding works is the Bernward Doors, a masterpiece of bronze casting. Together with St. Michael's Church, the cathedral was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985. St. Michael's is a three-aisled basilica in the Ottonian, pre-Romanesque or early Romanesque style. Its monumental 13th-century ceiling painting depicts the family tree of Christ on 1,300 oak boards.
The historic Market Square also tells the story of Hildesheim's past: the Butchers' Guildhall was a guild house and is decorated with hundreds of carved and painted works of art. The Roemer and Pelizaeus Museum Hildesheim houses the world's second-largest Egyptian collection. Since December 2025, you can explore objects from 4,000 years of ancient Egyptian culture in the newly opened permanent Egyptian exhibition, using multimedia displays and a range of interactive stations designed to be family-friendly and engaging. The museum also includes natural history, ethnological and local history collections, as well as a collection of paintings and prints. The bike and outdoor park at Ortberg in Bad Salzdetfurth has been open to the public since 2014. Ramps, North Shore features and singletrack trails add to the mountain biking training facilities. The Wildgatter is a nature park covering around six hectares and home to more than 300 animals. It can be reached by car, with parking available, or by city bus route 5; admission is free. For families with children, Klosterpark Lamspringe also offers a playground or a mini-golf course. The destinations are quite different: one focuses on wildlife in a nature park, while the other offers play or mini-golf in a monastery park.
Culture in the Region and Practical Information
The abbey building at Lamspringe Monastery dates from 1731. It contains the Hall of Continents and the historic Abbot's Hall, which can be visited on guided tours. The open-air event “Lamspringer September” features music, theatre and other events with international artists on various days.
