In Pliening, traces of the town’s early history meet a different attraction at the sports grounds: a skate park with a streetball court next to it. There is also an exhibition venue run by the local heritage association in Gelting. These varied subjects can help you decide what to focus on during your stay—from history and activity to local culture.

Local history and facilities at the sports grounds

Archaeological evidence attests to an early church on the site of today’s Kreuzkirche dating back to 1000 AD. Its connection with the present-day church makes the town’s long history tangible in a specific place. If you are interested in historical traces, this offers a different way to experience Pliening from looking at its more recent recreational facilities.

A skate park at the sports grounds in Pliening was officially opened. The streetball court is located right next to the skate park’s obstacle. These two neighbouring facilities provide a clear contrast with the historical significance of the Kreuzkirche: here, the focus is on the skate park and court at the sports grounds.

Since August 2025, the Pliening Local Heritage Association (Heimatverein Pliening e. V.) has had access to exhibition space in the museum room at the Old School in Gelting, in the municipality of Pliening. The museum room broadens the cultural perspective beyond the site of the Kreuzkirche. If you plan to visit, check visiting arrangements in advance.

More experiences in the wider Ebersberg destination

The wider Ebersberg destination also offers a variety of reasons to tailor your stay to your personal interests. The observation tower in Ebersberg Forest can be reached by climbing 169 steps. From the top, the view stretches across the Alpine foothills, from the Berchtesgaden Alps to the Allgäu; on especially clear days, distant peaks over 3,000 metres high can also be seen. This viewpoint offers a different experience from Pliening’s local history and facilities.

The Museum of Forest and Environment has stood right next to Ebersberg Forest since 2004. It focuses on the history of forest use and forest ecology. The Ebersberg Forest Environmental Education Centre has been awarded the Bavarian “Umweltbildung.Bayern” quality seal and runs programmes in education for sustainable development. These take place mainly outdoors and in the adjacent forest; visits by school classes and other groups are possible. This gives you the option of choosing between a view from the tower and topics related to forests and the environment.

For a cultural outing, the Kirchseeon Perchtenlauf is an annual feature of the run-up to Christmas. Elaborate masks and costumes, drums and bells shape the atmosphere in the market town of Kirchseeon. Another seasonal occasion is the annual harvest festival at Herrmannsdorfer: the menu includes, among other things, porchetta, pastrami, bratwurst, Auszogne pastries and freshly tapped Schweinsbräu beer; the stables and workshops also open their doors. Check the dates if you would like to include these events in your plans.

You can find more historical topics in the region’s Roman past: a branch of the Roman road led to Roman farmsteads in Poing, discovered during construction work in 2004. The Museum of the City of Grafing offers insights into artistic and historical highlights of the surrounding area, as well as the lives and working conditions of people in the region around Grafing, through special and permanent exhibitions. The museum lists its opening hours as Thursdays from 6 to 8 pm and Sundays from 2 to 4 pm; it is closed on public holidays. Check the times before visiting.

Elkofen Castle offers another distinctive historical feature: it is located in Unterelkofen, two kilometres south of Grafing’s town centre, and is one of the best-preserved castles in Upper Bavaria. A wide, deep moat surrounds the castle; it was once filled with water. The former Herrmannsdorf estate, east of Glonn, is a nationally renowned model project for organic farming. These varied subjects can help you decide which experiences matter most when choosing where to stay.
