The Ebersberg Forest combines sweeping views with insights into forest history and ecology. Climb the observation tower’s 169 steps and look out across the entire Alpine foothills—from the Berchtesgaden Alps to the Allgäu. On exceptionally clear days, you can even see distant peaks over 3,000 metres high. Nearby, the Ebersberg Forest also has marked hiking trails, an accessible forest nature trail and a wildlife enclosure.

Experience and understand the forest

The Forest and Environment Museum has stood right by the Ebersberg Forest since 2004. Its main themes are the history of forest use and forest ecology. The museum therefore offers a different way to explore the forest than the observation tower: rather than sweeping views across the Alpine foothills, the focus is on how the forest is used and the natural relationships within it. Those interested in both aspects will find different ways to make the most of a stay in Ebersberg here.

The Ebersberg Forest Environmental Education Centre also focuses on education for sustainable development. The centre has received Bavaria’s “Umweltbildung.Bayern” quality seal. Most of its events take place outdoors and in the adjoining forest; visits by school classes and other groups are possible. Its programme therefore differs from a museum visit: the focus is on events held mainly outdoors. The marked hiking trails, accessible forest nature trail and wildlife enclosure offer further, varied ways to enjoy nature nearby.

History and culture in the region’s towns

A discovery in Poing recalls the town’s Roman past: a branch of the Roman road once led to Roman farmsteads there, which were discovered during construction work in 2004. The find connects a specific place with the history of early routes and settlements. It offers a different way to explore the past than the exhibitions in Grafing, which feature art history and the lives of people in the surrounding area.

The Museum of the City of Grafing offers insights into artistic and historical highlights from the surrounding area, as well as the lives and work of people in the region around Grafing, through its special and permanent exhibitions. The museum lists its opening hours as Thursdays from 6 to 8 pm and Sundays from 2 to 4 pm; it is closed on public holidays. Elkofen Castle is located in Unterelkofen, two kilometres south of Grafing town centre. The castle is one of the best-preserved castles in Upper Bavaria. A wide, deep moat surrounds it; in the past, it was filled with water.

Pre-Christmas customs and harvest thanksgiving

In the market town of Kirchseeon, the Perchten procession is a firmly established part of the pre-Christmas season and delights numerous visitors every year. The striking masks and elaborate costumes define the procession’s appearance; drums and bells give its distinctive atmosphere an audible expression. Those interested in regional customs will find a recurring event here with a markedly different character from the region’s nature and museum experiences.

Herrmannsdorfer hosts a large farm festival once a year for harvest thanksgiving. The menu features specialities from the fire pit, porchetta, pastrami, bratwurst, fresh Auszogne pastries and freshly tapped Schweinsbräu beer. The barns and workshops also open their doors. The former Herrmannsdorf estate, east of Glonn, is a nationally renowned model project for organic farming. The farm festival adds a culinary and agricultural touch to the destination’s historical and nature-focused experiences.

The experiences mentioned are in different locations, so choose where to stay based on which places you would like to make the focus of your trip.

The overview of towns includes: Glonn, Egmating, Ebersberg, Markt Schwaben, Baiern, Kirchseeon, Anzing, Hohenlinden, Grafing bei München, Zorneding, Vaterstetten, Poing, Pliening, Oberpframmern, Forstinning, Steinhöring, Aßling.
