Niedernberg: Water Tower, Roman Era and HonischBeach
Accommodation in Niedernberg
A tall water tower and visible traces of a Roman fort: Niedernberg combines local history with nature and a lakeside stay. The Niedernberg Cultural Trail follows nature paths that mostly run right along the water. HonischBeach adds another highlight at Niedernberg Lake. The different themes can help you plan your trip: Would you like to discover historic landmarks in the town, include the cultural trail or spend time at the beach and on the sunbathing lawn?
Buildings and Traces of Local History
The water tower in Niedernberg was built in 1958 and is 44 metres high. Its tower shaft was constructed in eleven working days. Locally, the tower is known as “Langer Adam” (“Tall Adam”), after Adam Klement, the mayor at the time. Its year of construction, height and name offer a striking introduction to local history.
Built in 1461, St. Cyriakus is Niedernberg’s Catholic parish church. In the southern part of the old town centre, markings in the street paving indicate the location of the foundations of the gate tower of the completely built-over Roman fort. This makes the site of the fort visible in the streetscape. Most of the remains lie beneath buildings and are not publicly accessible.
Nature Paths and Time by the Lake
The Niedernberg Cultural Trail follows nature paths that mostly run right along the water. Some sections follow the “Wet Limes”, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The trail thus connects nature paths with a named historical context. If you plan to walk the trail, check local conditions before setting out.
HonischBeach at Niedernberg Lake has a sandy beach and a spacious sunbathing lawn. It offers room for sunbathing and relaxing in the shade. The beach and lawn offer different ways to enjoy a stay by the lake. Check local notices about current conditions before your visit.
More Destinations in the Wider Miltenberg Destination
The wider Miltenberg destination also offers further nature and cultural attractions. Miltenberg’s town park was laid out in the style of an English park and as an arboretum at the end of the 19th century; today it contains nearly 150 different species of trees and shrubs. The Felsenmeer is a natural monument dating from the last ice ages, whose period is given as spanning 2.58 million to 11,700 years ago.
The route to the Felsenmeer also helps you plan an excursion in Miltenberg: from the starting point at Mildenburg Castle, the town walk leads through the municipal forest and through the Steintor gate. After turning at Steintor, the Felsenmeer is about 600 metres away. The “3 im Wald” (“3 in the Forest”) adventure trail combines a nature barefoot path, an art trail and a tree information trail. These destinations complement Niedernberg’s themes with distinct experiences in Miltenberg.
The Miltenberg District Cultural Weeks include a variety of events for all ages each year from mid-September. The programme includes concerts featuring classical and contemporary music, as well as jazz and electronic music events. Exact dates vary from year to year. When planning your trip, you can weigh up Niedernberg’s local and nature themes against additional cultural or scenic destinations in the wider Miltenberg destination.
