Kleinwallstadt invites you to take a closer look: at the Templar House, at historic architectural styles; and on the forest nature trail, at trees, animals and the functions of the forest. There is also a sound tree, which brings the trail to a close with a melody. Architectural history and nature watching offer different points of focus—a helpful guide when you are considering which themes you would like your trip to revolve around.

Templar House and the History of the Town

The south façade of the Templar House still gives an idea of what the building must originally have looked like. It is one of the oldest secular buildings in Mainfranken. “Secular” describes non-religious buildings; the Templar House therefore represents a different side of architectural history from churches and monasteries. The Old Castle in the Kleinwallstadt Forest also tells of an earlier era: it was a medieval castle complex dating from the second third of the 13th century. Together, the two topics offer a historical perspective ranging from a surviving building to the history of a castle complex.

Forest Nature Trail: Topics to Read About, Observe and Hear

To find your way when arriving in Kleinwallstadt, follow the signs towards “School/Swimming Pool” to the forest nature trail. Check the signposting on site, as it may change. Along the trail, information boards with pictures and text provide information about forest trees and animals, the forest’s past and present functions, and hunting. This brings together knowledge of nature and the history of how the forest has been used—topics that offer repeated opportunities to take a closer look as you walk.

A raised hunting stand stands right beside the wildlife clearing, and anyone can use it to observe the wildlife. At the end of the forest nature trail, the sound tree offers a very different experience: a small hand-cranked music box is attached at one end. Turn it, and a melody plays at the other end. The sound tree is considered Kleinwallstadt’s longest musical instrument, and possibly the longest in the Miltenberg district as well. Picture boards, wildlife observation and sound thus create a succession of different impressions, without limiting the forest nature trail to a single topic.

When choosing a holiday apartment, a simple question can help you decide: should your trip focus mainly on architectural history, or on forest topics, wildlife observation and sound? Those who enjoy reading and looking at historic architectural styles will find a specific point of interest in the Templar House; those who prefer nature topics can explore the information boards and wildlife clearing in more depth.

Culture and Landscape in the Wider Miltenberg Destination

The wider Miltenberg destination offers further cultural and landscape themes. The district lies between the Odenwald and the Spessart and features deeply incised river and stream valleys. In Miltenberg, the Stadt Museum presents the history of the town and region in three historic half-timbered houses on the market square, the Schnatterloch. The district’s Culture Weeks take place every year from mid-September and offer a varied programme for all ages. They include concerts featuring classical and contemporary music, as well as jazz and electronic music events; specific dates and offerings vary. The wider destination therefore offers a choice of both museum visits and an annual cultural programme. You can plan your trip according to whether history, landscape or events matter most to you.
