Nature

The Vanoise National Park extends south and east of Val-d'Isère over 5,240 hectares. Nearly 60 percent of the municipality of Val-d'Isère is protected under French environmental law. The biotope protection order at the Col de l’Iseran protects the Leissières ridge and remarkable areas below the pass. In this protected mountain landscape, ibex and marmots are highlighted as characteristic animals of the Vanoise.

Culture

The Musée Val d’Histoire presents the development of Val-d'Isère through topics such as traditional residential architecture, the environment, the beginnings of skiing and the creation of the ski resort. The museum is interactive and offers texts in French and English.

The traditional village of Val-d'Isère features stone buildings; its bell tower dates from 1664. Guided tours organised by FACIM (Fondation Action Culturelle Internationale en Montagne) take place throughout the summer and lead through the village of Val-d'Isère and to its 17th-century buildings. The preserved hamlet of Le Fornet is also among the destinations mentioned for the guided tours in summer.

The Fête du Vieux Val is organised by the association Les Pics à Bouic and offers numerous events for children and adults throughout the weekend.

Activities

The Tignes–Val d’Isère ski area provides access to more than 300 kilometres of pistes. It is connected via the Tommeuses chairlift, the Col de Tovière or the Borsat chairlift, followed by a ski descent via the Col de Fresse. For cycling, the Tignes–Val d’Isère Bike Park offers more than 220 kilometres of marked trails for beginners and experienced riders.

Around the snow-covered Lac de l’Ouillette, there is a blue cross-country skiing loop of around 1.5 kilometres and a red loop of around 4 kilometres. Lac de l’Ouillette offers panoramic views of the Vanoise and is popular with hikers. Trout fishing at Lac de l’Ouillette is open to everyone without a fishing licence; a fishing fee must be paid on site. The lake can be reached via the road to the Col de l’Iseran or by the free Solaise gondola.

The Espace Plage at the Centre Aquasportif includes a 25-metre sports pool and a 416-square-metre leisure pool. The wellness area of the Centre Aquasportif has three hot tubs, three saunas and a steam room. The Centre Aquasportif also offers indoor climbing courses with routes up to 12 metres high for beginners and experienced climbers.

Geographical location

The Col de l’Iseran lies at an altitude of 2,770 metres, is the highest paved mountain pass in the Alps and forms the highest point of the Route des Grandes Alpes. It connects Val-d'Isère with Bonneval-Sur-Arc and attracts cyclists, motorcyclists and hikers every summer. The Refuge du Fond des Fours is located in the Parc national de la Vanoise on a route to or from Val-d'Isère. The Val-Bus shuttles run regularly in Val-d'Isère both in winter and summer.
