Culture and Village Character
The Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste stands on a promontory and was built in the 17th century. It features a Rosary altar with five of the fifteen Rosary scenes in total, as well as two further altars. Guided tours of the church are available on request through the mairie déléguée of Saint-Jean-de-Belleville.
The Notre-Dame des Grâces Chapel was built in 1740–1741 on a Greek-cross floor plan. Its roof is characterised by a domed lantern and a small bell tower above the entrance. The chapel contains an early 18th-century lantern and dome, three altars, and an altar covered in Cordouan leather. It is located halfway between Villarly and Saint-Jean-de-Belleville on a rocky promontory and offers views of the mountains.
The village of La Flachère is home to a small chapel of Romanesque origin; the coats of arms of the archbishops of Tarentaise can be seen on the bell tower. The hamlet of La Sauce is considered the best-preserved village on the route to Plan Lombardie. Its characteristic rural architecture is an example of building on a slope. The Chapel of Saint-Barthélémy in La Sauce dates from before 1633 and was renovated in the 2000s.

The route to Plan Lombardie is rated as very easy, is 12.1 km long, and can be completed as a round trip in approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. It involves 474 metres of ascent and 469 metres of descent. The route starts and ends in La Flachère in Saint-Jean-de-Belleville.
The dense Forêt de Longefrasse protects settlements from avalanches and holds back soil and rubble in the event of rockfalls. The ascent to Cheval Noir from La Sauce is considerably more demanding: the round trip is 14 km long, the walking time is 7 hours, and both the ascent and descent involve 1,241 metres of elevation gain and loss respectively.
Local Character
La Ferme des Combes in La Sauce produces Beaufort d’alpage in summer. Beaufort cheese is made and sold on site at the Combes mountain pasture, which can be reached on foot from La Sauce in 20 minutes.
The hut at Plan Lombardie serves homemade meals, desserts and tarts, some of them made with highly local products. It is equipped with solar panels that allow e-bike batteries to be charged safely.
Getting There
The hut at Plan Lombardie is accessible by car for people with reduced mobility. From Saint-Jean-de-Belleville, drive towards Deux Nants and La Sauce. La Sauce is 7 km away; leave the car there and continue on foot towards Cheval Noir and Vallon de la Platière.
