The Voie Sarde was initially a Roman road and was rebuilt as a royal carriageway in the 17th century.

Nature

The Gorges de Saint-Christophe extend for 6 kilometers through cool, damp wooded areas shaped by glacial meltwater over nearly 2 million years. Several species of bats live in the Gorges de Saint-Christophe, including the common pipistrelle and the whiskered bat.

Saint-Christophe lies at the end of the Guiers Valley plain, between the last foothills of the Jura and the first steep folds of the Chartreuse Massif.

History and Culture

The Charles Emmanuel II Monument was erected in 1674 in honor of the Duke of Savoy, who promoted the redevelopment of the Voie Sarde. The Charles Emmanuel II Monument and part of the Voie Sarde are included in the guided tour of the historic cave site.

The Pont Romain can be viewed free of charge at the historic cave site of Saint-Christophe and marks the location of a former customs post between Savoy and France. The La Fru rock shelter in Saint-Christophe-la-Grotte indicates a temporarily used settlement site for people passing through.

Experiences

The Voie Sarde can be explored independently and free of charge on foot as a round trip lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes. The family game Les aventures de Magda et Azil takes approximately 3 hours and 15 minutes and includes 12 games along a 5-kilometer exploration route.

At the Grotte Supérieure, an introduction to caving is offered on a 600-meter-long horizontal route. This introduction is offered as a family activity for children aged six and over, supervised by a qualified instructor, and includes the provision of equipment.

The Grotte Inférieure features an acro-caving course combining caving, climbing, and tree climbing. The acro-caving course includes rappelling down a 40-meter-deep shaft, a zip line, and a suspension bridge.

The cave tour follows a 1.2-kilometer-long path with an elevation difference of 150 meters.

Food and Drink

La Cure Gourmande combines a restaurant with a terrace and a shop selling regional products and local handicrafts. Gaec de la Farconnetière operates a farm shop selling yogurt, dessert creams, fromage blanc, cheese, ice cream, and sorbets. Les Bergers du Beau-Voir welcomes visitors to the farm to introduce them to its dairy products.
