Nature
The protected landscape features include the dry grasslands on the upper slopes of Monterminod, which are classified as Espaces Naturels Sensibles. The Bout du Monde site is also one of the places in Saint-Alban-Leysse covered by the designation of the Parc naturel régional du Massif des Bauges.
Culture and History
The Via Saturnina ran along the hillside in Saint-Alban-Leysse and was up to 6 metres wide. The Église de Saint Alban Leysse already existed in the 12th century. The hamlet of Villaret is home to the Chapelle Notre-Dame de Lorette, whose existence was first documented in 1576. The small vaulted building has a semicircular apse; above the altar is a semicircular wall niche containing a stone Madonna and Child.
The Gothic Chapelle de Saint-Saturnin is an old pilgrimage site in a rock face near a climbing area. The Château de Monterminod dates from the 11th century. The Papeterie du Bout du Monde site lies at the confluence of the Doria and Leysse rivers, downstream from the Bout du Monde waterfall. The Papeterie du Bout du Monde is described as a paper mill; a building at the Bout du Monde waterfall is already marked on the 1728 Sardinian Map.
The municipal app “Saint Alban-Leysse Autrefois” covers local cultural history. It offers an interactive map with audio commentary on local heritage sites and aims to contribute to the development of local tourism. The municipal heritage app also lists the Via Saturnina as a heritage site in Saint-Alban-Leysse. Since opening in March 2024, the Maison des Arts in Saint-Alban-Leysse has held monthly exhibitions covering all areas of art.
Trails
The Boucle de Razerel is a hiking trail in Saint-Alban-Leysse that leads from the town through woodland and vineyards into the surrounding countryside. It is open year-round, provided weather conditions are favourable. The trail crosses terraced meadows and features a panoramic information board with views of Mont Granier and the Chambéry basin.
The Boucle du Bout du Monde starts at the Plaine des Sports and follows an almost flat interpretive trail to the confluence of the Leysse and Doria rivers. After a first edition in 2024, the associated cycling tour of the local heritage was offered again; the route is approximately 10 kilometres long.
