Trails and Hiking
The Sentier des Alpages is connected to the Tour de la Lauzière. It is a long but easy balcony trail that passes alpine lakes.
The hike to Grand Arc starts in Tioulévé or at Pont des Rouelles and offers panoramic views across the entire Alpine massif. The Sentier de montée à Montsapey connects Randens with Montsapey, reaches the Chapelle de Montsapey and offers views of the Lauzière, Belledonne and the Bauges.
The Sentier Nature et Souvenir is an accessible walking trail for everyone that tells of the harsh former life of the inhabitants of Montsapey. It passes through pastureland and beech forest before rejoining the descent of the Circuit du Lac Noir towards Tioulévé.
The Sentier du Trou du Loup follows old paths towards Randens and Bonvillaret. It passes the Rocher fendu, a natural rock fissure, and illustrates aspects of forestry – timber felling and extraction – as well as predator control using a wolf trap.
The Circuit du Moulin illustrates various ways of using water for energy and leads to a mill that also housed a sawmill.
Landscape
The Chalet du Tour stands at an altitude of 1,434 metres south of the Lauzière Massif. It is a former alpine farm that was used to produce and store cow’s Tomme and goat’s cheese, and is an authentic example of the mountain architecture of the Maurienne Valley.
Lac de Clartan lies below the ridges of the Lauzière. With patience and quiet, marmots and chamois can be observed there.
The Chapelle de l’Immaculée Conception was built between 1897 and 1900 on a rocky promontory and offers panoramic views over the Combe de Savoie.
Culture and History
The Church of Saint-Barthélemy features trompe-l’œil wall paintings on a blue background, created by P. Moretti in 1891. The church also contains numerous polychrome wooden statues created by the Gilardi brothers.
The Church of Saint-Barthélemy is associated with the classical and baroque music festival “Les Arts jaillissants”, which takes place in July.
Montsapey’s visitor programme includes baking bread in the communal oven.
