Nature

Montailleur lies within the continental Type 1 ZNIEFF area “Versant sud-est des Hautes-Bauges”. The Haute-Combe de Savoie is characterised by rocks and steep slopes; its relatively undisturbed forests are home to a diverse bird population.

Culture and history

The Château de Montailleur was built on an oval feudal motte. A square tower with sides measuring 8 metres, dating from the 12th or 13th century, remains of the Château de Montailleur. The site lies above the town centre and Les Bognons, on a promontory overlooking the glacial trough of the Isère.

The Chapelle Saint-Michel was associated with the Château de Montailleur in the 15th century. The Église Saint-Maurice is a Neo-Gothic church. It was consecrated in 1885 and built according to the plans of the diocesan architect Joseph-Samuel Revel.

Tradition

Regional skydivers are reviving the Saint-Michel tradition in Montailleur. In connection with the Saint-Michel tradition, the parish church celebrates its patron saint, Saint Maurice of Agaunum, one week earlier. As part of this tradition, regional skydivers go there to pray before a celebration in the parish church.
