La Motte-En-Bauges: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
La Motte-en-Bauges stretches from the “island” of the Chéran at an altitude of 615 metres to the wooded summit of Mont-Chabert at 1,475 metres. Culture and History
The main village of La Motte-en-Bauges is considered one of the oldest settlements in the Bauges. It is situated on a molasse promontory north of the Mollard hill, where the church stands. The Église Saint-Victor is a Neo-Gothic building constructed in 1862 according to plans by the architect Duverney.
Several historical traces also form part of the local landscape. The medieval Maison forte de la Frénière already existed before the 15th century. In the 19th century, a Gallo-Roman site with buildings and a necropolis was discovered in La Motte-en-Bauges. The Château des Cerises is a manor house restored in the 19th century and built on the former site of the château belonging to the de Cerise family.
Landscape and Nature
The Plaine d’inondation du Chéran geosite is accessible from the hamlet of Le Rocher in La Motte-en-Bauges. At the geosite, a flat path leads across the Plan d’eau de La Motte-en-Bauges to the right bank of the Chéran.
Paths and Activities
The Promenade Picot is a 4.4-kilometre circular route with 52 metres of positive elevation gain. It leads to the suspended Passerelle Picot, which offers views of the Chéran. The Promenade has only very gentle inclines and is considered accessible to everyone. La Motte-en-Bauges is also mentioned as a starting point for hikes in the Bauges Massif.
The fishing pond of La Motte-en-Bauges is a private, enclosed body of water for first-category fishing, with brown trout. Fishing there is permitted only for holders of the special fishing permit for this pond.
Cheese and Local Tradition
At Ferme La Marmotte en Bauges, visitors can discover and taste cheese. La Marmotte en Bauges sells Tome des Bauges AOP, fromage blanc battu, faisselle and Raclette de Savoie.
The history of production also includes the fact that farmers in La Motte-en-Bauges began building communal dairies for cheese production.
