Rhône: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Beaujolais received the UNESCO Global Geopark label in 2018. This award recognises the geological and landscape diversity of the region. The area’s landscape, wine and cultural connections are at the heart of the designation – including for anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in the Rhône area.

Nature

Beaujolais lies on the edge of the Massif Central, northwest of Lyon, with views towards the Alps. In the Saône Valley, lowland forest has been preserved along the riverbanks; the valley provides fish with shelter and spawning habitats. An inventory carried out in 2012 recorded at least 1,300 wetlands in Beaujolais. The quarries of Beaujolais provide nesting walls for eagle owls. The underground quarries and mines of Beaujolais are home to almost half of Europe’s cave-dwelling bat species. At Mont Brouilly, there is a geosite with information panels and a landscape observatory.

Wine

The Beaujolais appellation extends across the northern part of the Rhône département and a southern edge of Saône-et-Loire, between the Saône River and the Monts du Beaujolais. Beaujolais wines are made from the Gamay grape variety. The Beaujolais vineyards are situated on different soils composed of granite, diorite, schist and fluvioglacial deposits. Hameau Duboeuf is Europe’s largest wine tourism park.

Cycling

The Voie Verte has ten loops for cycle tourism around its main route. The Voie Verte and the associated cycle paths are managed by the Rhône département.

Culture and History

The Tower of Oingt was built before 1183 as part of the second castle complex, where the lords of Oingt resided. The tower houses a museum spread over three floors. From its terrace, views extend across the Azergues Valley, Beaujolais, Lyonnais, the Monts d'Or, the Alps and Bugey.

Les Ateliers d'Art de Oingt offer studio visits, courses and exhibitions. Maison Commune is the oldest house in Oingt. It contains an art gallery that can be visited free of charge during the season; exhibitions feature painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics and installations. The Museum of Mechanical Music in Oingt displays barrel organs, street organs, phonographs, music boxes, mechanical pianos and automata, all of them in working order.
