The Réserve Naturelle Régionale des Gorges de la Loire also includes Unieux and covers 355 hectares spread across five sites. The following rules apply to this protected area: it may only be visited on designated paths and without motor vehicles.

Paths and Activities

The educational circular trail PR2 “Du Pertuiset à la Noirie” runs for 5.5 kilometres from Le Pertuiset to La Noirie. The GR3 follows the Loire through Unieux and connects Mont Gerbier-de-Jonc with Saint-Étienne over several kilometres.

The former railway line at Le Pertuiset is now used as a road and path. Since 2014, Parc Nelson Mandela has been a 4.5-hectare visitor park with leisure, cultural and sports facilities.

Culture and History

Unieux Town Hall is officially recognised as 20th-century architectural heritage. Château Holtzer dates from 1861 to 1864.

The Pont du Bicentenaire is an architecturally significant bridge structure in the Gorges de la Loire and shapes the landscape of Unieux.

The structure at Le Pertuiset was built between 1883 and 1884 and is 94.24 metres long. The tour de trempe in the municipality of Unieux is a structure of a type unique in Europe. The hamlet of Hameau des Échandes dates from the 17th century.
