Culture

A fortified castle gate and part of the former rampart walk have been preserved in Sauvain. The church of Sauvain is Gothic in style and dates from the 14th century. The Musée de la Fourme et des Traditions was founded in 1968 by residents of Sauvain.

Culinary delights

At the Entreprise Laitière de Sauvain, visitors can learn about the production of Fourme de Montbrison TARIT in a visitor walkway covering the history of Fourme and the jasseries, and observe the stages of salting, moulding and draining. The “Tarit” brand of the Entreprise Laitière de Sauvain represents traditional craftsmanship in cheese production handed down since 1930.

Nature

The Terrain champêtre above Sauvain is a former basalt gravel pit landscaped by the municipality and its residents, offering an exceptional view over the valley. The Réserve Naturelle Régionale des Jasseries de Colleigne is freely accessible all year round; registration is required for the free events.

The Cascade de Chorsin lies in an ancient glacial valley; its water comes from the peat bogs located on the peaks. From the Parking de la Rivière, it can be reached on foot via an 8 km out-and-back route or an 11.5 km circular hike. The Source ferrugineuse de la Fontfort is a highly iron-rich, carbonated spring that emerges in a small, intensely orange-coloured pool on the riverbank.

Things to do

The forest botanical trail « le Vallon secret de Subertha » presents the trees of the Forez region on information panels and passes historical remains such as mills, cultivation terraces, dry-stone walls, paved paths, a medieval bridge and the Pierre Brune stream.

The Etang de pêche - Les Champas is a mixed salmonid reservoir where fishing with artificial lures is permitted. The easy Les jasseries de Renat hike leads across the Hautes Chaumes and passes jasseries, peat bogs and viewpoints along the way.
